The preface. The history of the Navy is a tale of daring exploits, feats of endurance, hardship and sacrifice; it is also the story of our nation. That many young people are interested in this history is beyond doubt. Daily, letters are received at the Navy's headquarters in the Ministry of Defence in London and at careers offices throughout the country, asking for material to help with school projects and study at all levels. There are many learned volumes but something simpler is needed, not dates but the stories behind them. We asked A Cecil Hampshire, naval author and former naval officer, to write a book with this in mind. It is not a detailed history but a glimpse into the Navy's past. We hope it will inspire you to dig deeper. Visits to the National Maritime and Imperial War Museums in London and Nelson's Victory at Portsmouth are obvious follow-ups.
