London: Richard and John Edward Taylor, Printers and Publishers to the University of London, 1844., 1844.. Fair. - Octavo, 9-1/4 inches high by 6 inches wide. Green cloth titled in gilt on the spine. The covers are rubbed and stained with wear to the corners. The head and tail of the spine are chipped and there is a small hole to the cloth in the middle of the spine. viii & 302 pages, including the half-title, illustrated with 5 textual illustrations and 5 plates, including 2 folding plates. The front edge of the "Table of Contents" leaf is slightly chipped. The hinges are cracked and the covers are pulling away from the otherwise tight clean text block. Internally very good. First edition of volume 2 of the collected edition of Faraday's "Experimental Researches in Electricity", complete in itself.Volume 1 was published several years earlier in 1839 and volume 3 was not published until 1855.["Printing and The Mind of Man" #308].From the library of Alfred M. Mayer with his signature, dated 1858, penned on the front endpaper and with his later armorial bookplate as "Alfred M. Mayer, Ph. Dr." mounted on the front pastedown.The American physicist Alfred Marshall Mayer (1836-1897) first worked for a mechanical engineer, to acquire a knowledge of tools, mechanical drawings and learning methods of constructing machines. He subsequently studied analytical chemistry before taking a position as chair of physics and chemistry at the University of Maryland in 1856 and later at Westminster College in Missouri (1859-1861). He traveled to study at the University of Paris and, upon his return, was appointed to chair several University departments. After supervising the erection of an observatory at Lehigh, he made several observations of Jupiter. Mayer was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society and published several articles titled "Researches in Acoustics" in the American Journal of Science.
