There is small doubt that, were it not for the expense of printing, every teacher of chemistry would use a textbook made by himself with either pen or scissors, for the sufficient reason that it is more acceptable to both the instructor and the student to use a book from cover to cover, rather than to cut and omit material from a work more voluminous than the class requires. The attempt has been made in these notes to induce the student to make use of works of reference. It is to be regretted that the energies are often bent towards blindly following the words of the text without ever attempting to read between the lines; but it is hoped that those who use what is here given may be led so to think for themselves as to create a desire to know rather than an anxiety to pass. Equations should be written under all the paragraphs, and the references should be examined in a most thorough manner. It is the author s practice to hold a daily quiz-class upon points of difficulty connected with the laboratory work; and he finds the results most satisfactory when a student is placed in charge of such a class and is required to answer such questions as may be asked by his fellow students.
