Dr. Hamilton saw the case of absence of uterus, detailed by Dr. Adams in consultation in 1885 with a country practitioner; the fcelus was above the superior strait; he applied the forceps, and had the doctor examine before using traction to be sure that nothing but the head was between the blades; forceps slipped, but the head was brought through the superior strait, and a mass of brains and foul debris came away in a gush; finally delivered head but placenta was adherent; he took it away, and showed it to the physician to convince him it had all come away. The uterus may have sloughed away afterward, but she certainly had one at that time. Dr. Fabrique reported a case of imperforate hymen with retained menstrual fluid; no force was used to force out the contents of the womb. Another case--a girl menstruated a year and then stopped; family said she had been sick nearly one year; she had some vaginal trouble. Family thought she was pregnant; digital pressure opened up the vagina so that menstruation was restored. As an antiseptic wash he uses bichloride, 1 to 5000; he has been struck with number of deaths in these cases; as thoroughly as antiseptics are used it must be something besides septicaemia. Dr. Martin thought the womb was not washed out as the cause of death when retained menses are liberated by operation for imperforate hymen. Dr. Adams said in one case infection came from the nurse using foul instruments unknown to him. He wished he could report siach cases as Dr. Fabrique. He thinks scarlatina or diphtheria may cause atresia vaginae by infection.
