It is almost impossible to keep a solution for one day, or two days, or three days, at a certain temperature with the ordinary appliances that we have for the purpose. If it is above that temperature at any one time, it is likely to become supersaturated with the substance that we are endeavoring to get the soluble of, and we all know that when a substance is once supersaturated it requires sometimes days, weeks or months for it to deposit the substance it has taken up. There is another point that is sometimes overlooked and that merits our attention, and that is the depth of the liquid and the amount of solid in proportion to the liquid. Mr. Beck had fifteen grains to one fluid ounce. It would require a considerable time to bring that fluid into contact with those fifteen grains of Santonin. I doubt if fifteen days would do it, especially if it is in a deep vial. Perhaps some of us have endeavored to get at the solubility of cream tartar, and you would be surprised at the difference it would make if you have the liquid very high and cover the cream tartar to any depth. You will find it almost impossible to dissolve it, even though your cream of tartar is strictly pure--99 per cent. cream of tartar. In making these determinations we should have, according to my experience, as shallow a liquid as is possible--just enough liquid to a little more than cover the substance of which we propose to get the solubility, and then under no circumstances should we allow the temperature to rise above sixty degrees, or the standard.
