The company has been making maps since 1834 and publishes its atlases in association with The Royal Geographical Society, a prestigious seal of approval. Philip's style is exact, detailed, map-lovers' cartography married to restrained, traditional design. (None of the flamboyance and plethora of photographs of The DK World Atlas here, just conservative, sensible map making.) The delicately tinted relief on the physical maps is an old trademark, with contrasting bright colours to differentiate countries in the political maps (readers may be reminded, comfortingly, of the atlases they used at school when they were children).
