Rock Run Mill in the Land of Promise: a Legacy of John Stump "of Stafford

Farmers carried their wheat to the mill where it was ground into superfine flour that was packed in barrels and shipped to the West Indies, Europe, or Baltimore. The retuning ships brought back goods that were stocked in nearby stores that added to the quality of life of the area's residents.Stump, the man, was a controversial character. Chapter 2 provides a comparatively compassionate look at his life.An important factor in the prosperity of the area was transportation. Chapter 4 chronicles the establishment of ferry service across the Susquehanna from Lapidum to Port Deposit, the Susquehanna Canal on the east side of the river just below the Maryland line to tidewater, the covered bridge across the Susquehanna at Rock Run, and the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canals from Havre de Grace to Wrightsville, Pennsylvania that passed through Rock Run.Marylanders are fortunate that in the 1950s foresighted people recognized the cultural, historic, and scenic beauty of the land along the lower Susquehanna. Encouraged by civic pressure, the state embarked on a program to acquire more than 2,500 acres and restore many of the dilapidated structures in the Rock Run area. Today, these buildings along with the mill help visitors better appreciate the past. To this end, Chapter 5 has been included as a walking tour of the historic Rock Run area. Not only does the chapter point out things of interest, but also challenges visitors to become involved by posing questions suitable for children to answer. To provide closure, the answers are included in notes at the end of the
