In this book, one of the leading contributors to the growing debate about men, masculinities and sexual politics, Victor J Seidler, criticizes the Enlightenment coupling of white, heterosexual masculinity with 'reason'. He argues that in modern society masculinity can never be taken for granted. Men must always prove that they are 'man enough' to cope in the 'correct' way with the problems and challenges of everyday life. He argues that in modern society masculinity can never be taken for granted. Men must always prove that they are 'man enough' to cope in the 'correct' way with the problems and challenges of everyday life. Seidler believes that men have to break this chain of obligations to the Enlightenment notion of masculinity. One promising front in developing change is to pursue men's relationship with feminism as well as with different masculinities. Through engaging with men's diverse relationships with their bodies, sexualities, emotional lives, feelings and desires, Seidler explores ways of affirming masculinities while critically engaging with the power that men have in the wider society. The book is also a contribution to antisexist politics. Seidler is interested in taking on those forms of men's politics which find it difficult to engage with men's power and society and also those who take it for granted that male power is normal and natural. He seeks to recognize both the power that white, heterosexual masculinities have in shaping forms of philosophy and social theory while at the same time recognizing that masculinity cannot be simply defined as a relationship of power. Men have to be able to accept themselves as men if they are to be involved in a meaningful process of change. This qualitative study of modern American men's process of embodying the authentic self examines the developmental journeys of men currently functioning at Wade's authentic level of consciousness in most life domains. Framed by psychoanalytic, humanistic, and transpersonal theorists as individuation, self-actualization, and self-realization, respectively, authentic consciousness represents the stage of personality integration and psychospiritual development prior to transcendental or nondual consciousness. 30 males, aged 32 -- 71 years, qualified to be interviewed out of an initial pool of 231 candidates who were subjected to 3 screening filters: nomination based on a description of 13 qualities associated with self-actualizers; and scoring at the authentic level on 2 quantitative developmental assessments, the Wade Mindsets Workplace Inventory, and the Wade Mindsets Relationships and Lifestyle Inventory. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews identified 3 distinct life phases significant to the men's development, and within them key themes which seemed to largely fit Joseph Campbell's hero's journey motif, with phases of this model reflected at other life stages. Early life themes included positive or negative parenting (especially dysfunctional or absent father), trauma, alienation, and heightened interest in spirituality. Adolescence/young adulthood was characterized by supportive relationships (especially positive male role models), disillusionment, suffering of incongruence, active commitment to Self, self-inquiry, insights, beginning authentic self-expression, and direct experience of Spirit. Themes of current life included abiding authentic self-expression, generativity, minimal struggle, continued commitment to Self, and spiritual worldview. Gender issues evolved across life stages as polarized, integrated, and balanced, respectively. Results suggest ways to facilitate modern men's development, carry implications for how to raise boys, and refine our understanding of the lived experience of the authentic stage of development. Man Enough - hardcover

Hardback, [PU: SAGE Publications Inc], This reply to Robert Bly's work "Iron John", offers a critical discussion of contemporary ideas of masculinity. The text moves away from the rationalist paradigm of masculinity, and demonstrates that a focus on men's somatic and emotional lives is a means of "embodying" knowledge., Gender Studies: Men
