This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: VI. THE KARANKAWA LANGUAGE. It has been for a long time a desideratum to ethnologists to obtain reliable information upon this coast language, which could furnish a clew to the origin and racial affinities of the nation. This desire has now been gratified, though in a modest degree only, and I intend to present the scanty linguistic information now on hand under three headings: 1. The vocabularies. 2. The grammatic elements of the language. 3. Affinities of Karankawa with other languages. 1. KARANKAWA VOCABULARIES. A. Vocabulary obtained from Alice W. Oliver. a and; gai a demoa na-i (this is) my bow and arrows (putting their hands upon them); gai a detnoa awa (this is) your bow and arrows. aguiya needle; from Spanish aguja. aha'mmish hush! don't cry ! (as said to children); aha'mmish sni'n ! get away! scat ! (as said to dogs and cats; with sharp accent). ahayika friend. The Spanish amigo was more used among them. When wanting to be on good terms with the whites, they preferred the term amigo and said: mucho amigo! kom ahayika hostile, enemy; the Karankawas called so several of the tribes around them. ahiik, ahok to kill, sing, and pi. of object; na-i ye do-atn ahok m'siis I am starting soon to kill deer. aknamas, aknamus to eat; kom aknanausnof eatable, or do not eat. aksol to whistle. akweten to drink. akwini tree; na-i am6ak akwini I fell from the tree. amfish; aquatic animal, see tchuta. amel, emphatic ame-el hungry, cf. mal; na-i amel, ta kwiamoya aknamus I am hungry, I want to eat bread. amhatn flour; ya amhatn corn flour, meal of maize. am6ak to fall; ka'da amoak, ka'da owi'ya the girl fell and wept. ana wan, a'nawa smoke (?) ashahak now, presently; halba mushawata takina; ashahak kwa-al, taim the chief has worked c...<
