Publisher's original uniform tan cloth with gilt titles to the spines and green and gilt Glasgow style decoration by Talwin Morris to the upper boards and spines. Top edge gilt. Endpapers with the cover design repeated in green and pink, and with a similar design to the title pages. Illustrated with a black and white portrait frontispiece to each volume. Text printed in black and red. Contained within the publisher's original green cloth box with titles in gilt to the top and printed paper contents label to the inside of the lid. A near fine set, the bindings square and tight with the occasional minor mark. The contents with occasional minor spotting to some endpapers are otherwise clean and bright throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The box with a little wear and a small area of bubbling to the cloth is otherwise in very good order. An attractive set. One of the most appealing sets to be designed by the Arts and Crafts book designer Talwin Morris (1865-1911). After taking up a post as Arts Manager for the Glasgow publisher Blackie & Son in 1898 (of which the Gresham Publishing Co. was a subsidiary), Morris quickly became acquainted with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the circle of artists associated with Blackie and the Glasgow School of Art. This had a significant influence on his work, ultimately resulting in over a decade of pioneering book design in which Morris pushed the boundaries of Victorian convention, moving away from the popular narrative bindings of the period and instead embracing the fine line and sinuous organic curve of more understated Art Nouveau styles. Beyond his influential career in book design, Morris also produced furniture, textiles and metalwork in the Glasgow Style.
