I desire to acknowledge most fully my obligations, direct and indirect, to the many authors whose works have been consulted during a long course of study. These Lectures lay no claim to originality, save in so far as I have endeavoured to make the statements contained in them my own by careful study of the prophetic writings themselves, with all the helps at my disposal so far as time allowed But no critic can well be more sensible of the many defects of the volume than its author. He lays down his pen with the consciousness that the words of the son of Sirach, applied by St. Augustine to the study of the Psalter, are even more applicable to the study of the Prophets.
