The author offers a thorough account of the history of psychosurgical procedures and the underlying rationale, with an objective evaluation of the results. Equally thorough is his study of clinical and social applications, with a unique integration of animal research and human clinical information. He also discusses ethical problems involved in the development of techniques to modify the brain and examines proposed applications of brain control techniques to social problems caused by agressiveness, biomedical experimentation on prisoners, and thephilosophy of manipulating personality and behavior by destroying or stimulating brain tissue." This book seeks to provide an answer to this and other questions about variability in combat performance. Some soldiers flee quickly from the battlefield, while others endure all hardships until the bitter end. Some combat units can perform numerous types of missions, while others cannot keep themselves organized during peacetime. Some militaries armed with obsolete weapons have out fought enemies with the latest weapons, just as some massively outnumbered armies have beaten back much larger opponents. In this first social scientific study of the effectiveness of combat troops, Newsome evaluates competing explanations for the varying combat capabilities and performances. There are four main explanations, each emphasizing the influence of a single factor. The first focuses on material endowments. How well funded are the troops? Do they have the latest protective gear and the most advanced weaponry? Second, some analysts claim that democracies produce better commanders, superior strategies, more motivated personnel, or better-managed personnel; others, however, associated those characteristics with more authoritarian forms of government. Third is the idea that giving more power to the troops on the ground in individual combat units empowers them with decision-making capability and adaptability to fast-changing situations and circumstances. Newsome presents evidence that decentralized personnel management does correlate with superior combat performance. Fourth, soldier capabilities and performance often are assumed to reflect intrinsic attributes, such as prior civilian values. Newsome argues that the capabilities of combat soldiers are acquired through military training and other forms of conditioning, but he does not entirely discount the role of a soldier's individual character. In the age-old nature vs. nurture argument, he finds that intrinsic qualities do count, but that extrinsic factors, such as training and environment, matter even more.(Publisher)., Praeger Security International, 2007, 3, Michigan: William B. From the dust jacket: This new commentary was begun through the cooperation of New Testament scholars in Europe, South Africa and America under the general editorial direction of the late Dr. Ned Stonehouse, Professor of New Testament, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. The commentary is being brought to completion under the direction of FF Bruce, Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis, University of Manchester, England. The several volumes already published have come to be regarded by ministers and scholars as authoritative works that will give direction to conservative New Testament scholarship for years to come, fulfilling the need for a commentary "which, while conversant with the modern critical assaults, draws from the scripture the ancient faith." Serving the interests of both pastor and scholar, the introductions and expositions proper are written exclusively in English. They are, however, based on a thorough study of the Greek text. Textual problems especially significant for the interpreter are evaluated, and the most important exegetical literature is taken into account. Supplementing the exposition, the more technical aspects, including grammatical, textual and historical problems, appear in footnotes and special notes or appendices. xxxiii 342pp. Yellow/green cover with black and white lettering.

CONDITION: Covers appear unmarked, but previous owner glued dustjacket to inside cover. First Edition, 1939. "This paper does not attempt to study the nature and employment of air forces in general, but only one aspect of the case -- the bombing of cities from the air. A study of bombing planes and the material effect remains in the realm of pure theroy until we inquire into the strategical and tactical application to be made of such effects. An inquiry as to the possibilities of limitation by international agreement may fail of its results if not founded upon earlier conventions concerning the laws of war in general. Each of these and other related fields requires technical, and the treatment may be as technical and as extended as requisite. But there should be somewhere a brief, nontechnical synthesis, giving to those who are not technicians in any of the fields a general idea what it is all about. This is an attempt at making such a synthesis. The paper opens with a glance at the general legal background and at the World War development in our specific field; passes to an examination of the post bellum theroies which make air operations independent of those on the ground, and direct action against civilian morale an end in itself; attempts to weigh the cost of such warfare against the results to be expected of it; and closes without attempt at prophecy, with speculations as to possible future action. For convenience the text of several pertintent documents is added in an appendix." from the Preface. minor edge wear with lightly age-toned text block edges and endpapers along gutters, else, Pristine Interior.
