Auszug: Die Villa Romana del Casale ist eine spätrömische Villa in der Nähe der Stadt Piazza Armerina in der Provinz Enna auf Sizilien. Sie wird oft einfach als Villa del Casale oder Villa von Piazza Armerina bezeichnet. Die Villa ist ein wichtiges Denkmal des römischen Siziliens und berühmt für ihre Bodenmosaiken. 1997 erklärte die UNESCO die Villa Romana del Casale zum Weltkulturerbe mit der Begründung, dass die Villa del Casale bei Piazza Armerina das hervorragendste Beispiel einer römischen Luxusvilla ist, das bildlich die vorherrschende soziale und ökonomische Struktur ihrer Zeit veranschaulicht. Die Mosaiken, mit denen sie dekoriert ist, sind außergewöhnlich in ihrer künstlerischer Qualität und ihrem Erfindungsreichtum sowie in ihrer Menge. Grundriss der VillaDer Gebäudekomplex der Villa del Casale bedeckt etwa 1,5 Hektar. Es sind heute noch etwa 45 Räume erhalten. Die Reste der Villa lassen sich in vier aneinander angrenzende Bereiche verschiedener Orientierung einteilen: Der Boden fast aller Räume des Anwesens ist mit Mosaiken aus farbigen Tesserae bedeckt, die insgesamt eine Fläche von rund 3.500 m bedecken, mehr als in jedem anderen bekannten Gebäude des römischen Reichs. Die stilistischen Unterschiede zwischen den Mosaiken der verschiedenen Bereiche sind sehr gut sichtbar. Dies weist jedoch nicht auf eine Ausführung in verschiedenen Epochen hin, sondern auf verschiedene Werkstätten, die unterschiedliche Modellalben (Vorlagenbücher) verwendeten. Der Stil der Mosaiken verrät den Einfluss nordafrikanischer Künstler, die möglicherweise die Arbeiten auch ausführten. Jeder der vier Bereiche der Villa liegt wegen der Hanglage des Grundstücks auf einer eigenen Ebene und verfügt über eine eigene Richtungsachse. Trotz der offensichtlichen Asymmetrie im Grundriss ist die Villa das Ergebnis eines organischen und einheitlichen Projekts.
