Of the author himself, it will fall to others closely con nected with him to Speak at large. I would here briefly notice the impression which his fine character, his wide knowledge, and his intellectual honesty made upon his contemporaries and fellow-workers. Born in Tasmania on September 18, 1852, son of Thomas Arnold - learned and high-minded son of the famous Headmaster of Rugby William T. Arnold was educated first at the Oratory School at Birmingham, then at Rugby, and finally at University College, Oxford, where he graduated in 1875, making up later for his second in 'greats' by winning the Arnold l'rize with the essay here republished. For seventeen years from 1879 he was on the staff of the Manchester Guardian. Late in 1896 he was obliged to retire owing to a painful illness, which ended fatally on the 29th of May, 1904. But though he was a most enthusiastic and conscientious journalist, winning the deep respect, gratitude, and warm affection of his colleagues, he never gave up his earliest literary love - the study of the history of the early Roman Empire. He was far from confining his attention to this subject. He had made a special study of Keats, and wrote a remarkable introduction to his poems, while, in a great variety of articles and reviews, he showed an intimate knowledge of English and French poetry and drama.
