The emergence of The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) in 2005 was the culmination of a long and contentious process. In this work Rob Jenkins provides a concise introduction that traces the origins and evolution of peacebuilding as a concept, the creation and functioning of the PBC as an institution, and the complicated relationship between these two processes. Jenkins discusses how continued contestation over what exactly peacebuilding is, and how its objectives can most effectively be achieved, influenced the institutional design and de facto functioning of the PBC, its structure, mandate and origins. He then moves on to examine the peacebuilding architecture in action and analyses the role that the PBC has carved out for itself, reflecting on the future prospects for the organization. The theory and practice of peacebuilding has assumed increasing importance over the last decade, and this work is essential reading for all students of conflict resolution, peace studies and international relations. Its emergence was the culmination of a long and contentious process, stretching back to at least the early 1990s. Robert Jenkins traces the origins and evolution of peacebuilding as a concept, the creation and functioning of the UN Peacebuilding Commission as an institution, and the complicated relationship between these two processes.
Centred on two closely related questions, he examines: how has continued contestation over what exactly peacebuilding is, and how its objectives can most effectively be achieved, influenced the institutional design and de facto functioning of the PBC? to what extent has the work of the Commission, during its first two years in existence, helped to shape how various actors conceive of and seek to operationalize the notion of peacebuilding?<

Routledge, 2013. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. Established by UN resolutions in 2005, the affiliated bodies of the Peacebuilding Commission, an intergovernmental body composed of 31 rotating member states; the Peacebuilding Support Office, an administrative secretariat to the commission; and the Peacebuilding Fund are collectively known and the UN's Peacebuilding Architecture (PBA). In this volume, Jenkins (political science, City U. of New York) examines how the contested concept of "peacebuilding" has developed, first on its own and then in relation to the institutional structures of the PBA in the five years after its establishment, particularly in the context of the assertion of bureaucratic and political interests. After outlining how "peacebuilding" has been variously framed in the discourse in terms of human security, stabilization, peacekeeping, nation-building, and similar concepts and examining the structure and origins of the PBA, with both discussions including consideration of how differing interest groups have influenced outcomes, he considers two cases in which the PBA has performed as a functional entity in the period 2006-2010 (2013 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR), Routledge, 2013<
