A few considerations may be brought forward to show that this idea of the origin of morality is a mistaken one and the apprehension as to its future groundless. The common notion that the Bible is the source of our. Moral conceptions is not merel at variance with the facts, but is discredited by the Bible itself. Whiz shows clearly that, long before the actual records were written, such conceptions were recognised and acted upon by the persons whose history is related. Indeed, a very early moral perception is implied by the legendary story of Eden, the significance of which lies in the fact that man had by disobedience to a divine command attained a knowledge of good and evil, which apparently it was intended he should never In-this - incident the theological mind sees a '5 Fall, while the reasoning mind sees a rise the first stage in the growth of a normal and necessary experience. The fallacious explanation hides a germ of truth; but it is a strange perversity that insists on such a palpable myth being accepted as veritable history.
