Modeled after Martial and Juvenal, the major classical influences on Elizabethan satire, its tone is that of vigorous and outraged pseeimism, its method that of direct rebuke, and its objects of attack now 'gulls and fooles' in general, now very real persons, former friends, poets, people in high places... It was among the first to sound that peculiarly negative, melancholic, and malicious note that we associate with the late nineties, with the verse satirists...'
