So said Irish poet William Butler Yeats, and so Charles de Lint has done. He has spread before us the wondrous fabric of his dreams in this tour de force of modern urban fantasy. De Lint, today's leading writer of urban magical tales, has created the imaginary city of Newford and peopled its streets, its music clubs, and back alleys with characters both dark and bright, both human and inhuman, both frightening and wondrous fair. Jilly paints magic in rough city streets. Geordie plays fiddle and longs for a ghost. Christy collects urban folklore and myths, while the angel of Grasso Street gathers the young and the scared and the poor and the lost. The gemmin live in abandoned cars, the skells traverse the tunnels below, mermaids swim in the grey harbor waters and fill the cold nights with their song., Tor Books, 1994-07-15, 2.5, New York, NY, U.S.A.: Baen Books, 1996. THANK YOU ....Product Information:BEYOND SANCTUARY by Janet Morris THE SACRED BAND GOES NORTH - TO WAR Here is the newly revised Author's Cut edition of BEYOND SANCTUARY , the first ever full-length novel to take you beyond the notorious Thieves World(TM) fantasy universe, where gods still stalk the land, warring with demons and human sorcerers and trampling unfortunate humanity underfoot. If you like stories of bold brave knights employed in meritorious duty, or tales of ladies delicate and fair, be warned: Beyond Sanctuary, set at the foot of notorious Wizardwall, may be too realistic for your sensibilities. War is coming to Tyse, an occupied town at the foot of Wizardwall. And so is the Sacred Band, commanded by Tempus, who is called the favorite of the storm god, the Riddler, Tempus the Black, and worse by his enemies.Tempus longs to align his cavalry with the Nisibisi freemen on Wizardwall's slopes, fighting to regain their homeland against the allied sorcerers of Black Nisibis and the evil Mygdonian empire, intent on conquering all who stand in their way. BEYOND SANCTUARY lies occupied Tyse, a war-torn town in the shadow of Wizardwall that hosts refugees, insurgents, murderers, thieves, and wizards whose allegiance shifts with the wind. And abutting Tyse is godless Peace Falls, where anything can happen, and often does. . . . To some, Tempus is a villain. To others, a hero, albeit a hero with a terrible curse: any he loves will spurn him; any who love him soon die of it. His curse grants him immortality, the gift of healing, and great prowess on the battlefield, but denies him sleep and love -- a curse so dreadful that even the southern storm god he once served has turned against him. But god or no god, Tempus and his Stepsons, with help from his sorcerer-slaying sister Cime and Jihan the Froth Daughter, must battle Datan, the archmage of Black Nisibis and the inhuman legions of Roxane, Death's Queen. In BEYOND SANCTUARY , Tempus and his Sacred Band must war against the deadliest demons and most malevolent mages conceivable. In this war there is no such thing as honorable defeat, or even honorable death in a losing cause. The winners will eat your soul. BEYOND SANCTUARY is the first novel in Janet Morris' Sacred Band of Stepsons: Beyond Trilogy , followed by BEYOND THE VEIL and BEYOND WIZARDWALL .Publisher Baen BooksISBN-10 0671559575ISBN-13 9780671559571Book Title Beyond SanctuaryAuthor Janet MorrisFormat HardcoverLanguage EnglishTopic Science Fiction / GeneralPublication Year 1985Genre FictionSeries Thieves' WORLD Ser., Baen, 1985, 3, UsedAcceptable. In the ruins of a place once known as North America li es the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve ou tlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the di stricts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the ann ual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-o ld Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival, for her, is second natur e. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh surv ival against humanity and life against love. Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Reviewed by Megan Whalen T urner If there really are only seven original plots in the world , it's odd that boy meets girl is always mentioned, and society g oes bad and attacks the good guy never is. Yet we have Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, The House of the Scorpion--and now, following a long tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins has n't tied her future to a specific date, or weighted it down with too much finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death R ace 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators i n a televised fight to the death.Katniss, from what was once Appa lachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Game s, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes t he importance of holding on to one's humanity in such inhuman cir cumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a new Theseus, is cold, calculating and still likable. She has the attributes to be a winner, where Peeta has t he grace to be a good loser. It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: ru naway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. The State of Panem--which needs to keep its tributari es subdued and its citizens complacent--may have created the Game s, but mindless television is the real danger, the means by which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who fail to con form. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date t he book? It might, but for now, it makes this the right book at t he right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over human ity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll t alk funny, and all our sentences will end with the same rise as q uestions. When Katniss is sent to stylists to be made more telege nic before she competes, she stands naked in front of them, stran gely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that I'm no more sel f-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking ar ound my feet, she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures wh o are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn 't just the contestants who risk the loss of their humanity. It i s all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not only the Games but the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this is the f irst book in a series, not everything is resolved, and what is le ft unanswered is the central question. Has she sacrificed too muc h? We know what she has given up to survive, but not whether the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to learn more. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated distric ts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 2 4 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literal ly, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss 's young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's femal e representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and h er male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems t o have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely r ealistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships i n the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. From Booklist * Starred Review* This is a grand-opening salvo in a new series by the author of the Underland Chronicles. Sixteen-year-old Katniss poaches food for her widowed mother and little sister from the fo rest outside the legal perimeter of District 12, the poorest of t he dozen districts constituting Panem, the North American dystopi c state that has replaced the U.S. in the not-too-distant future. Her hunting and tracking skills serve her well when she is then cast into the nation's annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death where contestants must battle harsh terrain, artificially concoct ed weather conditions, and two teenaged contestants from each of Panem's districts. District 12's second tribute is Peeta, the bak er's son, who has been in love with Katniss since he was five. Ea ch new plot twist ratchets up the tension, moving the story forwa rd and keeping the reader on edge. Although Katniss may be skille d with a bow and arrow and adept at analyzing her opponents' next moves, she has much to learn about personal sentiments, especial ly her own. ISBN: 0670869899 "In a less-than-subtle anti-science polemic, London Times columnist Appleyard (Understanding the Present) addresses some of the myriad ramifications of our expanding knowledge of genetics. ""Concealed within the knowledge we are now acquiring are insights that may be profoundly socially divisive and which could overthrow the basis on which the wealth and stability of Western democracies are constructed,"" is one of his many pronouncements. Appleyard adequately explores some of the obvious ethical implications sure to be present in a future in which our genetic makeups are known to all and possibly open to manipulation: selective abortion of fetuses not to the liking of prospective parents; the refusal of insurance companies to cover individuals with genetic predispositions for certain disorders; the inevitable quagmire in the criminal justice system when criminals argue that their genes forced them to act in an antisocial manner. His main point, however, is that the social implications of science are far too important to be left solely to the scientists. But try as he might to whip this thesis into a controversy, most readers will find it a straw man, as few scientists disagree with Appleyard's view. There are many, however, who would argue strenuously with his overly simplified attacks on scientists and the scientific method--for example, that ""[i]n order to become scientific, we must become inhuman."" Try telling that to Einstein, Tagore or Bohm. (Aug.)" Publisher's Weekly. CONTENTS: Women's health / Adele E. Clarke --Pathways of health and death / Lois M. A world where murder, torture and fights to the death are the norm. Where the guards turn a blind eye to the lethal weapons prisoners carry.... and use almost daily. This book is the powerful story of one man's battle to survive in some of the world's crullest and most inhumane prisons. The author, wrongly accused of drug trafficking, found himself catapulted into the maelstrom of madness and degradation that exists within Indonesian jails. Surrounded by murderers and sadistic violent criminals, he soon learned that life can be as cheap as a bowl of rice or a cigarette. During his imprisonment, Parnell was subjected to unthinkable sessions of torture, both physical and psychologigcal. Left to starve and fight every day for his survival, he was forced to eat everything from cockroaches to human flesh. This is an incredible tale of fatalism and bureaucracy, of corruption and the horrors of prison, but most of all it is a no-holds-barred account of what the human spirit can endure. Now thirteen years old, Zlata began her d iary just before her eleventh birthday, when there was peace in S arajevo and her life was that of a bright, intelligent, carefree young girl. Her early entries describe her friends, her new skis, her family, her grades at school, her interest in joining the Ma donna Fan Club. And then, on television, she sees the bombs falli ng on Dubrovnik. Though repelled by the sight, Zlata cannot conce ive of the same thing happening in Sarajevo. When it does, the wh ole tone of her diary changes. Early on, she starts an entry to D ear Mimmy (named after her dead goldfish): SLAUGHTERHOUSE! MASSAC RE! HORROR! CRIMES! BLOOD! SCREAMS! DESPAIR! We see the world of a child increasingly circumscribed by the violence outside. Zlata is confined to her family's apartment, spending the nights, as t he shells rain down mercilessly, in a neighbor's cellar. And the danger outside steadily invades her life. No more school. Living without water and electricity. Food in short supply. The onslaugh t destroys the pieces she loves, kills or injures her friends, vi sibly ages her parents. In one entry Zlata cries out, War has not hing to do with humanity. War is something inhuman. In another, s he thinks about killing herself. Yet, with indomitable courage an d a clarity of mind well beyond her years, Zlata preserves what s he can of her former existence, continuing to study piano, to fin d books to read, to celebrate special occasions - recording it al l in the pages of this extraordinary diary. Editorial Reviews F rom Publishers Weekly A graphic firsthand look at the war in Sara jevo by a Croatian girl whose personal world has collapsed, this vivid, sensitive diary sounds an urgent and compelling appeal for peace. Filipovic begins her precocious journal in autumn 1991 as a contented 10-year-old preoccupied with piano and tennis lesson s and saturated with American movies, TV shows, books and rock mu sic. Soon the bombs start falling; her friends are killed by shra pnel or snipers' bullets; her family's country house burns down, and they subsist on UN food packages, without gas, electricity or water, as thousands of Sarajevans die. Filipovic, whose circle o f friends included Serbs, Croats and Muslims, blames the former Y ugoslavia's politicians for dividing ethnic groups and playing he ll with people's lives. She and her parents escaped to Paris, and her diary, originally published in Croat by UNICEF, was reissued in France and has already been much written about in the U.S. Ph otos not seen by PW. 200,000 first printing; film rights to Unive rsal; first serial to Newsweek; author tour Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal YA-From S eptember 1991 through October 1993, young Zlata Filipovic kept a diary. When she began it, she was 11 years old, concerned mostly with friends, school, piano lessons, MTV, and Madonna. As the dia ry ends, she has become used to constant bombing and snipers; sev ere shortages of food, water, and gas; and the end of a privilege d adolescence in her native Sarajevo. Zlata has been described as the new Anne Frank. While the circumstances are somewhat similar , and Zlata is intelligent and observant, this diary lacks the co mpelling style and mature preceptions that gave Anne Frank's acco unt such universality. The entire situation in the former Yugosla via, however, is of such currency and concern that any first-pers on account, especially one such as this that speaks so directly t o adolescents, is important and necessary. While not great litera ture, the narrative provides a vivid description of the ravages o f war and its effect upon one young woman, and, as such, is valua ble for today's YAs. Susan H. Woodcock, King's Park Library, Burk e, VA Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Librar y Journal In September 1991, at the beginning of a new school yea r and while war was already as close as Croatia, Filipovic, a ten -year-old girl in Sarajevo began keeping a diary about her school friends, her classes, and her after-school activities. The follo wing spring that childhood world disappeared when the war moved t o Sarajevo. Instead of school and parties, her world came to cons ist of cowering in cellars during the shelling, trying to survive despite intermittent electric power and water supply, and sadnes s: sadness when friends and relatives left the besieged city for a safer area; sadness when those who remained behind were killed; sadness that her childhood had vanished. Filipovic has no intere st in the politics of this war (she dismisses all political leade rs contemptuously as kids) but only in its effects on those close to her. The power of her book lies precisely in its concern with innocence lost. Recommended for popular collections. Marcia L. From Booklist Zlata Filipovic of Sarajevo began keeping her diary in 1991, just before her elev enth birthday. Ebullient and accomplished, Zlata recorded the swi rl of activities she avidly pursued, from school to piano lessons , skiing, parties, and watching her favorite TV shows, all Americ an. We immediately sense that Zlata and her family have a deep lo ve for their country, but just as we begin to enjoy Zlata's fine young mind and cheerful disposition, the chaos and terror of war shatter her world. Schools close, socializing becomes too risky, and what was once a cozy home is transformed into a fragile shelt er bereft of electricity or water. In spite of great tragedy and deprivation, Zlata keeps making her lucid diary entries, carefull y chronicling the claustrophobia, boredom, resignation, anger, de spair, and fear war brings. Another birthday passes, and Zlata's observations become even sharper and more searing. The convoys of fleeing citizens remind her of movies she's seen of the Holocaus t; she notices that grief and hardship have made her valiant pare nts haggard and sorrowful; and she can't believe that her clothes no longer fit. How could she be growing when she has so little t o eat? With a precision and vision beyond her years, Zlata writes that the political situation is stupidity in motion, and more ha untingly, life in a closed circle continues. Zlata brings Sarajev o home as no news report can. Her diary was first published by UN ICEF, then released in France; U.S. serial rights have gone to Ne wsweek, and Zlata and her parents will be visiting here this mont h. Donna Seaman From Kirkus Reviews Originally published in Croa t by UNICEF, this is the wartime diary of a Sarajevo girl who has since moved to Paris. Zlata began keeping her diary at the age o f 11, nearly eight months before the shelling of Sarajevo began. A chronicle that begins in September 1991 with Zlata buying schoo l supplies is forced, by March 1993, to reckon with the fact that all ``the schools near me are either unusable or full of refugee s.'' Zlata's voice, understandably, has difficulty maturing at a pace demanded by the events it records, and some passages communi cate more bathos than outrage or insight. But that's history's fa ult, not Zlata's. (First serial rights to Newsweek) -- Copyright ®1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. ., Viking, 1994, 2.75, Mandarin, UK, 1990. Reprint. Editorial Reviews From School Library Journ al Grade 5-9--This concluding volume of Farmer's trilogy opens wi th a storm that brings new adventures and challenges for apprenti ce bard Jack, who is now 14. A destructive, restless spirit has b een drawn to his village by the presence of a magical bell, and J ack, his friend Thorgil, and the Bard set out on a journey to the magic Notland, home of the mermaids, in order to set the spirit to rest. As in the previous books, there are challenges and enemi es aplenty, and readers will enjoy revisiting characters from tho se titles, including Jack's changeling sister. The conclusion bri ngs the characters to a new understanding of their own pasts and strengths. Jack and Thorgil's often-rocky relationship gives humo r and humanity to both characters, and the Bard continues to be e nticingly magical. As always, Farmer excels at the details that b ring a magical world to life, from food to smells to travel incon veniences, and her merfolk are inhuman and powerful. Readers who appreciate strong fantasy with mythic roots will find this an int riguing read.--Beth L. Meister, Milwaukee Jewish Day School, WI E ND Review It's a wondrous tale of hobgoblins, mermaids and sea h ags, Saxons and Northmen, old gods and young bards, thoroughly st eeping readers in Norse mythology. From School Library Journal Gra de 7 Up -In a not-too-distant future, the United States of Americ a has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to b e replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 di stricts. This book will definitely resonate with the generati on raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiato r.' From Booklist * Starred Review* This is a grand-opening salvo in a new series by the author of the Underland Chronicles. Populated by three-dimensional characters, this is a superb tale of physical adventure, political suspense, and romanc e. Hell's Prisoner by Christopher V. V. Parbnell. Water damage to end few pages. Couple of slight creases to cover. Prepare yourself for a journey into the Indoneasian penal system. Marcia L. S prules, Council on Foreign Relations Lib., New York Copyright 199 4 Reed Business Information, Inc.
