Berkeley: University of California Press, 1978. Softcover : pp. (6) 826 : blue covers lettered in black and white. Corners slightly curled; top edge foxed; lower edge soiled; $6 price sticker to top cover; The Great Wave off Hanagawa bookmark to half title; extensive underlining and moderate amount of marginalia by poet Billy Jones. A poem in 24 sections written over a period of 46 years, from 1928 to 1974. Zukofsky's life work, a personal epic that at times is "strange, beautiful, mad, touching, unreadable, readable, elusive and fascinating" (Joseph Cary). Queensland-based poet and artist Billy Jones (1935 - 2012) marked many of the books in his library with heavy underlining and notes at the beginning and end and sometimes throughout. These appear in Jones's distinctive block capitals, often in felt tipped pen and bleeding through the page. Zukofsky's "A" is no exception. Many margin notes relate briefly to where Jones is when reading (Fraser Island, Maloolaba [sic], in bed) while others take the form of comment on the text ("deep recurrent image of the horse horses") or poignant notes from life ("Bruce dead a wk (killed himself last Sat. night))" or sometimes a poetic observation of his own, "Childe playing in the sea shore park...", "Clearings of sky immaculate with stars, University of California Press, 1978, 0<
