New York: Simon & Schuster, 1979. The movie of the Bridge on the River Kwai was mainly fictional. The horrifying story of what actually happened to the British and Austrialian POWS after the bridge was built was not at all fictional. This book details how 2,000 POWS were jammed into a single hold on each of two Japanese ships, bound for mines and factories. But both ships were sunk by American submarines. Only 159 of those several thousand survived. And this is their harrowing story, told by the survivors to the authors. Although 30 years old, this First Edition, with a "number line" starting with a "1" to indicate First Printing, is in New, unread condition, with a New, unclipped dust jacket. There is a publisher's remainder logo stamped on the bottom edge. The book is bound in gray boards with black spine cloth and die-stamped gilt spine titles. The book measures 6 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches and includes 338 pages. It include endpaper maps in color. . First Edition. Hard Cover. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Here is Pulitzer Prize-winner's David Mamet's brilliant exploration of the Leo Frank case, handled with great assurance and dramatized with a scorching anger' (The Daily Telegraph). In 1913, a young woman was found murdered in the National Pencil Factory in Atlanta. The investigation focused on the Jewish manager of the factory, Leo Frank, who was subsequently forced to stand trial for the crime he didn't commit and railroaded to a life sentence in prison. Shortly after being incarcerated, he was abducted from his cell and lynched in front of a gleeful mob. In vividly re-imagining these horrifying events, Pulitzer Prize-winner David Mamet inhabits the consciousness of the condemned man to create a novel whose every word seethes with anger over prejudice and injustice. Frank's internal monologues and dialogues with his defense attorney, the Rabbi appointed as his spiritual counselor, and the imaginary interlocutor who serves as foil for his desperate attempts to come to terms with his terrible predicament, are all infused with the dynamic force and the remarkable ear that have made David Mamet one of the most acclaimed voices of our time. inventory #24504 ISBN: 0684841193., 0<
