Wear to spine tips, with top 1/4 inch of spine chipped away; bit of wear to outer corners; tear to fore margin of one leaf (no printing affected); endpaper dusty; else a VG tight copy, inner hinges not cracked. With a tipped in AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. One side of a 7 x 5 inch sheet of ruled paper, folded once, VG condition. Dated "Chelsea, April 27, 87", addressed to Mrs. Edward R. Tyler, declining an invitation owing to "physical disability". BAL 17540, state 2. Shillaber, a Boston author and printer, wrote several books featuring the humourous doings of Mrs. Partington. She had first appeared in the pages of a weekly he published called "The Carpet-Bag", which also published the earliest fictional work of Mark Twain. Shillaber was important in the development of a new school of American humour, and his books of the sayings of "Mrs Partington" were bestsellers. His contemporary Mark Twain was influenced by his works; Twain's character "Aunt Polly" in TOM SAWYER was partially drawn from Mrs. Partington. >>> Note: in Feb. 2020, a reader of my description, Stephen Sakellarios, emailed me this new information: "Technically, B.P. It was reprinted in the "Carpet-Bag," and then in the book. Where it is reprinted in the Carpet-Bag, Shillaber says it had first been published in the "Pathfinder."
