Every simple sentence which is intelligible ts reducible to the form A is or is not B; but it should becbserved that the former sentence has two meanings, as already observed. It may mean either that A is contained in B, or that A is cc extensive with B, where A is the subject, and B the predi cate. And is the copula. It is important to bearin mind this double meaning of the sentence 'a is B.' lfit should be said that A is B' may also mean 'a contains B.' we can then say that B is contained in A; and so we are where we were before. In ordinary langu the ambiguity of the form A is B is sometimes removed y words of limitation, as 'all,' 'every,' 'some but frequently there are no such words used, and the consequence is ambiguity.
