First Edition with PICTORIAL LAMINATED cloth, Stationery Office Books, 1986-03-01, 3, The Witch Doctorby Christopher Stasheff a Del Rey Book published by Ballantine Books 1994, fourth printing, ISBN#: 0345388518, Soft bound, Very Good condition (ex-library book with laminated cover and labels on spine and back cover, rubber stamps on top page edges and on first and title pages). The third book of Stasheff's Wizard in Rhyme series almost completely ignores the characters introduced in the first two novels. Indeed, it reprises a good deal of the plot of the first one, Her Majesty's Wizard, with a different central character, as Saul Bremener looks into the disappearance of his friend Matt Mantrell, finds the parchment Matt had been working on before he vanished, becomes obsessed with it in turn, and finds himself in a fantasy universe. He is meant to save the kingdom of Allustria from its usurping monarch, just as Matt was brought to the neighboring country of Merovence to do the same thing there. As in the other two novels, much of the interest in The Witch Doctor is derived from the way in which Stasheff takes medieval Catholic doctrine seriously. Here, it is much better integrated into the plot than it was before; the earlier novels tended to use it over frequently as an easy way out of a tight corner. Stasheff helps himself through Saul's attitude to it, formed by a rejected strict religious upbringing which leads him to initially be contemptuous of the idea that Christianity could have any meaning, and a strong determination to be his own man rather than doing the bidding of God or the Devil. At the same time, however, the plotting is very formulaic, as characters move from one puzzle to the next as though they were taking part in a role playing game rather than a novel. The characters themselves are ciphers, even Saul being far too much like a replay of Matt. The novel is rather like the later part of the Xanth series by Piers Anthony in this respect, though it thankfully avoids most of the awful puns that are so important there. When Matt Mantrell, hero of The Oathbound Wizard , disappears suddenly, his closest friend, Saul Bremener, is worried. A search of Matt's apartment turns up a rune-covered sheepskin and spiders everywhere. His attention drawn to the manuscript, Saul barely feels the bite that transports him to Allustria, an alternate universe in which poetry is again the key to magic. Possessing a strong literary background and a wide streak of skepticism, Saul instantly becomes a powerful though reluctant wizard. But Saul seems to be the only means of toppling Allustria's reigning power--Queen Suettay--and freeing the people. Since in Allustria power is divided sharply between good and evil, Saul spends as much time debating ethics and his own fear of commitment as he does battling witches, and the whole tale is a shade deeper and more literary than the usual fantasy, albeit with a few lulls in the action. Yet there are plenty of plot twists to keep fans reading. Sequel to The Oathbound Wizard (1992), about a medieval fantasy world of jousting and pageantry, where poetry holds the power of magic. Saul Bremener--poet, philosopher, and martial arts expert--falls into this world while investigating the mysterious disappearance of his friend Matt Mantell. Saul's knowledge of verse makes him a powerful wizard, but in his search for Matt he falls afoul of the evil Queen Suettray, and the usual complications ensue. Stasheff's work is well crafted and narrated, with lots of literary insertions and a balancing sense of humor; it's independently intelligible and complete in itself: these are the pluses. The book is approximately 4 1/8X 6 7/8 inches in size and contains 411 pages plus a ten page preview of Stasheffs following volume from the Wizard in Rhyme series entitled The Secular Wizard. The cover price is $5.99. For comparison, another copy of the book is currently offered on the Internet at TraderUSA for $26.62.
