Very Good. 2002 signed and inscribed first edition The University of Arizona Press (Tucson, Arizona), 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches tall hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, yellow paper-covered boards, black lettering to spine, orange endpapers, copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs, xii, 216 pp. Signed and inscribed ('Su Amigo') on the half title page in the year of issue by Lalo to his friends John and Karen Tanner, respected historians and authors. A very good copy in a like dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival sleeve. Signed copies are uncommon in the market. Laid in are the prior owner's notes on the book, an Arizona Daily Star article on Guerro's funeral and a cancelled check the prior owner wrote him in 2002 (presumably purchasing the book from the author), with Guerro's endorsement on the back. ~CCC~ Eduardo 'Lalo' Guerrero (1916 - 2005) was a Mexican-American guitarist, singer and farm labor activist best known for his strong influence on today's Latin musical artists. Guerrero is known as the Father of Chicano Music. He recorded and wrote many songs in all sorts of genre. He also wrote children songs and songs about Cesar Chavez, other farm workers and braceros. Guerrero wrote songs for El Trio los Panchos, Lola Beltran and many other famous artists. His Pachuco music of the 1940s and 1950s provided the sound track to loui Valdez' late 70s play and movie 'Zoot Suit.' He recorded over 700 songs since his first record in 1939 with Los Carlistas on Vocalion Record. In the 1940s he became a friend of the Ronstadt family of Arizona, in particular Gilbert Ronstadt, father of popular vocalist Linda Ronstadt. Linda recalls childhood memories of Guerrero serenading her. At his funeral, Linda sang a traditional Mexican song in tribute. Guerrero was officially declared a national folk treasure by the Smithsonian Institution in 1980 and was presented with the National Medal of Arts in 1996 by then President Bill Clinton. In 1992 Guerrero received the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment of the Arts. In late 2005 Guerrero was posthumously inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, and he was also inducted into the Tejano Hall of Fame and the Mariachi Hall of Fame., University of Arizona Press, 2002-02-01, Minor rubbing. Pulling together previously separate 'histories' of occupation, resistance, and collaboration he presents a definitive history of the period. This is a more complex history than the traditional dichotomy between 'collaboration' and 'resistance', one in which the ideological frontiers between Vichy and the Resistance were often blurred. This study ranges from the politics of Marshal Petain's regime to the experiences of the ordinary French people, from surrender in 1940 to the purges of liberation. The author restores the organized Resistance to a more central role than has been customary in recent years and presents a new social history of the resistance which takes in the roles of foreigners, women, Jews, and peasants.
