Gilt artifacts on front cover and spine, and very slight edgewear. . Clean and tight inside, with a handsome 19th Century bookplate from "The Mark Skinner library , Manchester, Vermont. and no foxing or stains. Pages xvi, 461 with index. Smith came from a working-class family in London and had no formal education. At age 14 he was apprenticed to Bradbury & Evans as a bank note engraver. But bitten by the archaeology Assyrian bug, he spent hours at the British Museum where an official noticed him and found him a minor job. He became a genius at decipherment of the cuneiform tablets from Ninevah. He was given the task of sorting and joining the broken tablets acquired from the Nineveh ancient library. The London Daily Telegraph offered an award of Pounds 1000. for an important missing fragment, and Smith had the extraordinary luck (albeit with his highly trained eye) to find it on the fifth day he was on site. Tragically he died of dysentery in Aleppo, age 36.<
