An interesting copy of this late work by Leavis, the final section of which offers an analysis of Eliot's 'Four Quartets'. Laid in is a typescript on yellow paper, which provides a brief report on Leavis's recent lecture at Newcastle's English Society (January 30th, 1969) and within this a short interview conducted for the 'Palatinate' - this being a Durham University student newspaper. At the foot of the typescript, the reporter one Adrian Barlow (who recounts the circumstances of its composition on his blog), Leavis - to whose scrutiny Barlow had agreed to submit before proceeding - has made a telling deletion, removing the phrase 'In our family we go on until we are killed on the roads' with a manuscript note stating that 'I wish you'd leave this last sentence out. I don`t want to disturb my wife gratuitously. F.R. Leavis, Feb. 3'. As Barlow himself reflects, Leavis's hesitation might have been personal as much as uxorial - this was in fact the fate of his own father, who died after a motorcycle crash during Leavis's finals.<
