New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. 267 pages. The first state of the first edition, with perfect type on pages 38, 90, and 248. This collection of short stories, published in the year following The Great Gatsby, includes several stories in the "Gatsby cluster" and is considered to be Fitzgerld's strongest collection of short fiction. In "The Rich Boy" are found the most often quoted (and misquoted) lines from Fitzgerald: Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves." The book is clean and tight, with just a hint of fraying at spine extremities and a few small spots of staining on several pages (I have included an image of the worst spotting).
