Stab binding with duct tape and red linen thread. Text from the Internet Anagram Server. Scott McCarney: "The source of images for State of the Union was the 1992 television broadcast of George W. Bushs State of the Union address. My boyfriend had recently given me a small point-and-shoot digital camera for my birthday. I was curious what a digital image from television would look like. I did not have this book in mind at the time, and I set up my camera on a tripod and turned down the volume on the TV. The resulting images of Bush emphasized the odd tics and expressions that had become a trademark of this president. In the forthcoming political cartoons, these expressions have mirrored the massacre of language which he is known for world-wide. The live tag in the frame of the television screen transformed into evil and then into vile. On the internet, and the resulting anagrams for The State of the Union became a text-crawl which separated Bushs expressive eyes from that of his mouth. "Emmy award-winning author Christopher Lowell is back with his second groundbreaking book, ready to inspire his millions of fans with hundreds of ideas that can transform their homes-and their lives. With his first book, Christopher Lowell's Seven Layers of Design, Lowell introduced design basics layer by layer, demystifying and reassuring the first-time home decorator. Now he takes the process one step further, encouraging readers to discover their own hearts' desires so they can turn their dreams into unique realities. Taking us by the hand, Lowell starts with his own experiences of self-discovery as a guide for the dreaming process. Next he provides a questionnaire that helps you identify your own sources of pleasure and fulfillment. Finally, he illustrates the process with exciting design projects built on particular themes. The longing to entertain friends in a cozy cocktail room transforms an awkward space into a "Martini Lounge"; dreams of living by the seashore become "Coastal Living"; the desire for travel and theatrical surroundings informs "Moroccan Mystique"; and nostalgia for the mid-twentieth century finds its creative expression in "Retro Chic. " Each of these imaginative rooms not only expresses the creative spirit, but also feeds the soul. As Lowell explains it, no matter what your budget, no matter what your talents, if you begin to understand the relationship between the interior of your mind and the interior of your home, you can create beauty in both. The sense of satisfaction promised by a home that you yourself decorated is not beyond your reach or your budget, if you follow the simple steps of America's favorite design guru. A tight and unmarked copy. 9.2in. x 6.2in. x 2.2in.In the oral and written histories of every culture, there are countless records of men and women who have displayed extraordinary physical, mental, and spiritual capacities. In modern times, those records have been supplemented by scientific studies of exceptional functioning. Are the limits of human growth fixed Are extraordinary abilities latent within everyone Is there evidence that humanity has unrealized capacities for self-transcendence Are there specific practices through which ordinary people can develop these abilitiesMichael Murphy has studied these questions for over thirty years. In The Future of the Body, he presents evidence for metanormal perception, cognition, movement, vitality, and spiritual development from more than 3, 000 sources. Surveying ancient and modern records in medical science, sports, anthropology, the arts, psychical research, comparative religious studies, and dozens of other disciplines, Murphy has created an encyclopedia of exceptional functioning of body, mind, and spirit. He paints a broad and convincing picture of the possibilities of further evolutionary development of human attributes. By studying metanormal abilities under a wide range of conditions, Murphy suggests that we can identify those activities that typically evoke these capacities and assemble them into a coherent program of transformative practice. A few of Murphys central observations and proposal include: The observation that cultural conditioning powerfully shapes (or extinguishes) metanormal capacities. The proposition that we cannot comprehend our potentials for extraordinary life without an empirical approach that involves many fields of inquiry and different kinds of knowing. The notion that a widespread realization of extraordinary capacities would constitute an evolutionary transcendence analogous to the rise of humankind from its primal ancestry. The proposal that all or most instances of significant human development are produced by a limited number of identifiable activities such as disciplined self- observation, visualization of desired capacities, and caring for others. The idea that a balanced development of our various capacities is possible through integrated practices. In The Future Of The Body, Murphy states that such practices can carry forward Earths evolutionary adventure and lead humanity to the next step in its development., Tarcher, 1993, 4, Feldheim, 2009. Hebrew Edition. New. Whether the Kotel is in your backyard or in the back of your mind, this special, handy volume is a vital and wonderful companion when you visit the Western Wall Chock-full of tefillos culled from throughout the ages and various sources, this anthology is a beautiful way to tap into the holiness of the Kotel HaMa'aravi, lending meaning, and inspiration to the experience Seminary girls, yeshivah bochurim, tourists, and residents will find their prayer transformed through this valuable, pocket-sized prayerbook In vowelized Hebrew only with a special, Kotel-inspired layout, this book also makes a wonderful gift or event memento, Feldheim, 2009, 6, 2020. Hardcover. New. ABOUT THE BOOK:- The human has always prided himself as an exceptional 'moral species' but has always been haunted by two questions: 'Why am I not good when I want to be'; 'Why do I do bad when I don't want to'. This is at the heart of what scriptures and sages have long alluded to as the eternal internal struggle—between good and evil—that wages in the human consciousness. The book posits that much of our confusion and angst stems from our inability to recognize the ramifications of this 'war' between two sides of our own 'self'. It is because we are ignoring this war that we are losing all other wars of the world. That 'ignorance' is the primary source of all the horrors, malevolence and violence that fill us with so much dread. But a 'favorable' outcome is possible only if the forces of goodness are aided to get an upper hand consistently—and that calls for two cathartic changes: consciousness-change by inducing a turn from the mind to the heart; and contextual-change, by radically reconstructing the roles of morality, money, and mortality in our everyday lives. The book offers a menu of insights and options we all can use to tilt the scales in the war waging inside each of us. The idea of human cruelty to animals so consumes novelist Elizabeth Costello in her later years that she can no longer look another person in the eye: humans, especially meat-eating ones, seem to her to be conspirators in a crime of stupefying magnitude taking place on farms and in slaughterhouses, factories, and laboratories across the world. Costello's son, a physics professor, admires her literary achievements, but dreads his mother's lecturing on animal rights at the college where he teaches. His colleagues resist her argument that human reason is overrated and that the inability to reason does not diminish the value of life; his wife denounces his mother's vegetarianism as a form of moral superiority. At the dinner that follows her first lecture, the guests confront Costello with a range of sympathetic and skeptical reactions to issues of animal rights, touching on broad philosophical, anthropological, and religious perspectives. Painfully for her son, Elizabeth Costello seems offensive and flaky, but--dare he admit it?--strangely on target. Here the internationally renowned writer J. M. Coetzee uses fiction to present a powerfully moving discussion of animal rights in all their complexity. He draws us into Elizabeth Costello's own sense of mortality, her compassion for animals, and her alienation from humans, even from her own family. In his fable, presented as a Tanner Lecture sponsored by the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University, Coetzee immerses us in a drama reflecting the real-life situation at hand: a writer delivering a lecture on an emotionally charged issue at a prestigious university. Literature, philosophy, performance, and deep human conviction--Coetzee brings all these elements into play. As in the story of Elizabeth Costello, the Tanner Lecture is followed by responses treating the reader to a variety of perspectives, delivered by leading thinkers in different fields. Coetzee's text is accompanied by an introduction by political philosopher Amy Gutmann and responsive essays by religion scholar Wendy Doniger, primatologist Barbara Smuts, literary theorist Marjorie Garber, and moral philosopher Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation. Together the lecture-fable and the essays explore the palpable social consequences of uncompromising moral conflict and confrontation. | 136 pages | 154 x 230 x 8mm | 222.26g., Princeton University Press, 2010, 6, Nabu Press, 2011-11-23.
