Soft cover. 1st Edition. 2005. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall., Bonhams Limited, 2005, This book is a good guide of the late 1920s for newcomers in Thailand when Bangkok had a population of 450 000 inhabitants. The first three chapters deal with all aspects of life in Bangkok and the rural area in central Thailand as perceived by the author, a Lieut.-Col. of the British army who was considered to be worth knowing. He served as governor for two years at Koh Pai, an island that was also used for penal purposes. In the remaining chapters, the author deals with all aspects of hunting, mainly snipe. Several chapters are devoted to guns, loading and handling them, to kit and ammunition, etc. In a humorous tongue in cheek way he deals with mishaps, avoidable and unavoidable, children, buffalos, bulls, snakes, snakebites, antidotes, cobras, criminals, gun robbery and strangers. He describes how he was robbed of his rifle, thrown into a ditch and left for dead. He narrates an incident when a young boy and girl were hidden in the bushes while they were fishing and he accidently shot the boy with some pellets while aiming at snipes. He describes the reaction of the father, “Well Sir”, said the father, a burly farmer, “I should not have minded so much if you had only shot the girl, but that other one is a boy and I want him to help me on the farm later on”. The last chapter deals with the islands Koh Sichang, Koh Kram, and Koh Pai in all their aspects, including the hunting of monitor lizards. The description of events and people is enjoyable to read even if one is not a hunter. Some copies may have light yellowing on covers due to UV light exposure and some copies may have dust/dirt from long-term storage. Otherwise the books are new/unread.Like New, Bangkok: White Lotus, 2010. Reprint. Soft Cover. New/n/a. Some of the party remain on the bank, while others, mounted on their elephants, plunge into the river in pursuit of their game. That the sport, even when pursued in this manner, is by no means exempt from danger, may be inferred from the following account given of a hunt by a British officer: --A party of four of us while riding from Dulrajpoor to Kbyraghur, were accosted, about seven miles from the latter place by a gwala, or herdsman, who threw himself at the horses feet, earnestly entreating that we would destroy an enormous tiger, which had fixed his abode in the adjoining grass jungle, and had for some time past been the terror of the neighbourhood: adding, that he subsisted almost entirely on human victims, and that on the preceding day, he had killed a bunjarres (travelling merchant) who had ventured on the border of the jungle to collect his stray cattle. The gwala pointed out the spot in which the tiger nestled; but having no fire-arms or other suitable weapon with us, and the baggage elephants being some miles in the rear, we were at a loss how to act. After a short deliberation two of our party rode on to the tents, while the third and myself, moved by the entreaties of the gwala, and in hopes of sport, determined to remain on the ground. Accordingly, we sat down under a tree, and had not waited long, before a palanquin belonging to one of the party came up: we found in it a canister of gunpowder, and an old single-barrel rifle, with five balls in the chamber. In a few minutes we were joined by two sepoys, with muskets but no ammunition, and a bearer with a double-barrel gun and ten balls. We now prepared fifteen cartridges, being the number of our balls, and were proceeding to the attack, when four of the baggage-ele. . .
