With the help of medicine and technology we are living longer than ever before. As human life spans have increased, the moral and political issues surrounding longevity have become more complex. Should we desire to live as long as possible? What are the social ramifications of longer lives? How does a longer life span change the way we think about the value of our lives and about death and dying? Christine Overall offers a clear and intelligent discussion of the philosophical and cultural issues surrounding this difficult and often emotionally charged issue. Her book is unique in its comprehensive presentation and evaluation of the arguments - both ancient and contemporary - for and against prolonging life. It also proposes a progressive social policy for responding to dramatic increases in life expectancy. Writing from a feminist perspective, Overall highlights the ways that our biases about race, class, and gender have affected our views of elderly people and longevity, and her policy recommendations represent an effort to overcome these biases. She also covers the arguments surrounding the question of the 'duty to die' and includes a provocative discussion of immortality. After judiciously weighing the benefits and the risks of prolonging human life, Overall persuasively concludes that the length of life does matter and that its duration can make a difference to the quality and value of our lives. Her book will be an essential guide as we consider our social responsibilities, the meaning of human life, and the prospects of living longer. 264pp.. First Edition. Cloth. EXCERPT: Preface - This book is designed to fulfill four basic objectives: (1) to describe, illustrate, and evaluate sixteen different ways of interpreting Canadian politics; (2) to stimulate interest in Canadian politics; (3) to enrich students' knowledge of Canadian politics by introducing them to new approaches; and (4) to demonstrate that no single approach can by itself generate an adequate, let alone balanced, explanation of the subject. Additionally, reading this volume should help students to recognize and make allowance for biases and to understand the strengths and the weaknesses, the potential and the limitations, of each approach as they encounter it in their studies. These sixteen original and generally brief essays should be of considerable help to those instructors and students who have spent tedious hours scouting libraries and bookstores for suitable material to illustrate the large number of noteworthy approaches. My own students will, I trust, find this wide-ranging single volume much more useful than the previous list of scattered sections and first or last chapters. While each chapter is self-contained and can profitably be read by itself, the significant benefits of assessing the inter-author comments and of general comparison will be largely missed if the book is not read in its entirety. The authors do not assume that readers come to this volume with substantial knowledge about Canadian politics; all chapters have been written with the beginning student in mind. Our aim is to help the student to understand and integrate the numerous ways in which substantive material is presented, be it in this book or elsewhere. Given this thrust and the usage of familiar categories, the beginning student should have no difficulty in relating these chapters to his other readings in politics. While the book may have many uses, it is intended to be used primarily as a main or auxiliary text for courses in Canadian and introductory politics. The annotated bibliographies at the end of each chapter should be helpful for students as well as instructors . . .. First Edition 2nd Printing. Trade Paperback. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Prentice-Hall of Canada, Ltd., 1979, Sharada Publishing House, 2014. First edition. Hardcover. New. 15x 23 cm. The world order of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) has always been a subject of considerable scholarly and global interest, and yet these are not too many books where the said subject has been extensively dealt with. Shri Attar Chand`s book is such a one which is based on sufficient study and research and covers all the important phases and facets 0f Nehru, highlighting the period 1920-1988 to present a study of Nehru`s ideas and impact. The essays contained in the volume present interpretations of Nehru`s philosophy and thoughts, viz., his strong adherence to democratic principles, his deep love for secularism, his great desire to see world free form tension and exploitation and his unending efforts at global cooperation for the good of the mankind, and his economic policies. Nehru`s contributions to the organization and consolidation of the Indian National Congress as a vehicle for the struggle for Freedom have been well evaluated in some of the essay. Nehru has been depicted as one of the makers of independent India and the values in the field of democracy, secularism, socialism and non-alignment set by Nehru have been discussed. Shri Attar Chand has augmented the collection with an elaborate and exhaustive introduction which not only throws ample light on the life, philosophy and achievements of Nehru as a leader of the Freedom Movement and the first prime minister of independent India, but also closely examines the far reaching results of Nehru`s economic policies and reforms. India`s planning since the First Five Year Plan, during Nehru`s time and after has been evaluated without any bias or prejudice. The introduction may be studies also as a well-researched study of India`s foreign policy as propounded and set in motion by Nehru. Shri Attar Chand`s work contains writings by some eminent persons who have lived and worked with Nehru for years. The book provides the readers with a historical perspective of Nehru`s world order. Sir Adam Roberts KCMG FBA (born 29 August 1940) is Emeritus Professor of International Relations at Oxford University, a senior research fellow in Oxford University's Department of Politics and International Relations, and an emeritus fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. With interests in civil resistance, international law, the United Nations, strategic studies, and the history (and theories) of international relations, his publications include works on the United Nations and on Hugo Grotius jointly edited with Professor Benedict Kingsbury. The book consists of 14 chapters written by separate authors, grouped into three parts: the problems to be faced, the lessons of past experiences, and a civilian defense policy. There is a general bias as a whole toward the idea that civilian resistance can be of value in national defense. This book was first published in Great Britain in June 1967, with the title The Strategy of Civilian Defense. It was an attempt to provide a sober assessment of the potentialities of non-cooperation and non-violent resistance as the basis for a nation's defense policy, and it contained the evaluations of critics as well as proponents of the idea. The publication of this new edition gives a chance to expand the introduction and to relate the ideas put forward in these chapters to the tragic and heroic events which followed the invasion of Czechoslovakia on 20-21 August 1968., Penguin Books, 1969, Emerald, 2014. Cambridge University Press, 2013. Softcover. New. English is a must for getting a job, communicating at the workplace and understanding business globally. It is also important to know English to face an interview, a group discussion or take a test which evaluates reading or writing skills. In a globalized world with escalating competition, it is essential that English courses at the undergraduate level are well supplemented with material that addresses skills gaps. English for Jobseekers aims to equip Indian students with the communication tools which will ready them for the job they are looking for. The book is designed as worksheets built around capsules of practical ideas about how best to communicate when in need of a job. The 10 essays in this volume address topics in business and management forecasting: forecasting applications in finance, including a decomposition forecast of stock prices using Excel, forecasting the net asset value of the PRWCX fund, and using prediction intervals to improve the information quality of bankruptcy prediction models; applications in operations and technology, in terms of comparing the technological performance between digital single-lens reflex and mirrorless cameras, a model for damage protection by service organizations, measuring scale efficiency in data envelopment analysis when considering environmental influences, and evaluating a Bayesian approach to forecasting stocking spare parts that require periodic replenishment; and forecasting methods like reducing bias is hierarchical forecasting, metrics for and the analysis of variables for wiki use, and comparing seasonal regression forecasting models for the US beer import market.
