Photographed through the windows of its double decker buses. In 2008 I returned to London having spent the last nine years living and working in Eastern Europe and Turkey and was surprised by the speed of change that had taken place. I wanted to document the city its movements and migrations its landscape and architecture its diversity and energy. I wanted to understand how so many people from all over the world manage to share the same space. The double-decker bus allows me to frame the city to give it sense. The lower level is very close to the street where I'm almost touching the people in the traditional form of street photography. The upper deck allows me the distance to capture the layers of the urban landscape. Between these two positions everything shifts along with the movement of the bus. I was also fascinated by how people use public space in a big city by that sense of shared invisibility. In sitting behind the window I also became invisible but the bus also gives you the privilege to see and understand the emotional content of London's everyday movements rhythms and rituals. The essence of the project is that you might take the same route everyday but what you see the ebb and flow on the street takes on a random nature. To capture this flow the concertina format reflects and mimics the feel of a bus journey but more importantly it gives the viewer the opportunity to create their own journeys by spreading the book out and combining different images together. This moves the book away from an author-led linear narrative to one of multiple possibilities. By supporting this book you will be giving space to another voice that considers the contemporary city in all its complex multicultural diversity and through the many layers of its history. "Last Stop è un libro formato leporello, stampato su entrambi i lati, che esplora la diversità della vita a Londra, attraverso fotografie scattate dai finestrini dei suoi autobus a due piani. Nel 2008 sono tornato a Londra dopo aver trascorso gli ultimi nove anni in Europa dell'Est e in Turchia e sono rimasto sorpreso dalla velocità del cambiamento che era avvenuto. Volevo documentare la città, i suoi movimenti e migrazioni, il suo paesaggio e l'architettura, la sua diversità ed energia. Volevo capire come tante persone da tutto il mondo riescono a condividere lo stesso spazio. L'autobus a due piani mi permette di inquadrare la città per darle un senso. Il livello inferiore è molto vicino alla strada dove tocco quasi le persone fotografandole, nella forma tradizionale della fotografia di strada. Il livellosuperiore mi permette di catturare a distanza gli strati del paesaggio urbano. Tra queste due posizioni tutto si sposta con il movimento del bus. Ero anche affascinato da come le persone usano lo spazio pubblico in una grande città con quel senso di invisibilità condivisa. Seduto dietro il finestrino sono anche diventato invisibile ma l'autobus ti dà anche il privilegio di vedere e capire il contenuto emotivo dei ritmi e dei rituali dei movimenti quotidiani di Londra. L'essenza del progetto è che potresti fare lo stesso percorso ogni giorno, ma ciò che vedi - il flusso e riflusso per strada - assume una natura diversa e casuale. Per catturare questo flusso, il formato a concertina riflette e imita la sensazione di un viaggio in autobus ma, soprattutto, offre allo spettatore l'opportunità di creare i propri viaggi allargando il libro e combinando insieme immagini diverse. Questo sposta il libro da una narrativa lineare guidata dall'autore a una delle molteplici possibilità".George Georgiou è nato a Londra nel 1961 da genitori greco-ciprioti. Nel 1987 si laurea con lode in “photography, film and video arts” al Polytechnic of Central London (University of Westminster). Ha fotografato a lungo nei Balcani, Europa dell'Est e Turchia, vivendo e lavorando in Serbia, Grecia e a Istanbul dal 1999 al 2009. Il suo lavoro è centrato sull'identità dei popoli e sulle persone riprese nelle proprie comunità, culture e ideologie. I premi che ha ricevuto includono un Nikon Press Award UK per il miglior saggio di fotografia nel 2000, il Pictures of the Year International first prize per Istanbul Bombs nel 2004, due World Press Photo nel 2003 e nel 2005, The British Journal of Photography project prize nel 2010. Ha pubblicato nei maggiori magazines internazionali ed esposto in tutto il mondo in numerose mostre personali e collettive, tra cui anche al MoMa di New York all'interno della prestigiosa mostra “New Photography 2011″. Le sue fotografie sono parte di collezioni istituzionali e private, tra cui quella del MoMa e della Elton John collection. Il suo primo libro, Fault Lines/Turkey/East/West, che indaga il complesso concetto di Est e Ovest, è stato pubblicato a maggio 2010 (in Italia con Postcart Edizioni) e ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti.
