FROM THE PUBLISHER - One of the masterpieces of contemporary Latin American fiction, Rosario Castellanos’ THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS, which tells of an uprising of Maya Indians in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, is now more relevant than ever, with the revolt of the Zapatista Liberation Army currently taking place in a Chiapas that has changed little since the novel was written. With the panoramic sweep of a Diego Rivera mural, THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS weaves together dozens of characters, plot lines, and perspectives in a tour-de-force of narrative structure that builds to an inexorable conclusion as unflinching as it is devastating. Based on episodes from actual Maya uprisings of 1712 and 1868, which are transposed in time to the 1930’s, the novel merges a wealth of historical information and local detail into a vision of the nature of oppression that is universal in scope. Since its first publication in 1962, THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS has appeared in numerous translations across Europe, but has never before been published in English. ROSARIO CASTELLANOS was born in 1925 in Mexico City and grew up on her family’s ranch near the Guatemalan border and later in Comitan, Chiapas, the setting for much of her fiction, including a collection of short stories, Ciudad Real, and two novels. After conducting postgraduate study at the University of Madrid, she returned to Mexico to work as a director of the Chiapas cultural program, an experience that brought her into contact with the indigenous peoples and culture of the region. One of the few female members of Mexico’s intelligentsia in the years following World War II, she held professorships in Latin American literature at universities around the world while continuing her prolific writing career publishing work in virtually every genre. Just prior to writing THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS, she returned to the region to spend three years as the director of a traveling puppet theater. Later, she served as the Mexican ambassador to Israel, where she was killed in an accident in 1974. (originally published in 1962). ISBN: 1568860382.

Gebundene Ausgabe, [EAN: 9781568860381], Marsilio Publishers, Marsilio Publishers, Book, [PU: Marsilio Publishers], Marsilio Publishers, Thirty years before the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas brought this little-known corner of Mexico to the world's notice, Mexican author Rosario Castellanos created a similar rebellion in her 1962 novel The Book of Lamentations. Castellanos has framed her story, which is set in the 1930s, around an actual 1860s uprising of Maya Indians against the Chiapan white ruling class. History and fiction meld seamlessly, mainly because conditions in the Chiapas Castellanos knew as a child hadn't changed much in the intervening 70 years; as late as the 1920s, impoverished Indians still served as mules, carrying white landowners strapped to their backs. The book's title is apt; Castellanos casts an unflinching eye on the effects of oppression, ignorance, and misery. The central characters, motivated variously by desperation, superstition, or ambition, may not be admirable, but they are all too human. In the end, a rebellion culminating in the grisly crucifixion of a child is doomed to failure. Although The Book of Lamentations is not a pleasant book, in an age where history seems increasingly to be repeating itself in Asia, in the Balkans, in Mexico, and elsewhere, it is a deeply instructive one., 67216011, Populäre Belletristik, 67221011, Action & Abenteuer, 67916011, Anthologien, 67220011, Buch zum Film, 67923011, Familiensagen, 67924011, Historisch, 67223011, Horror, 67926011, Krieg, 273042011, Medizin, 273043011, Metaphysisch, 67925011, Männerabenteuer, 67219011, Märchen, 67217011, Politisch, 55229011, Religion & Esoterik, 65642011, Schwul & Lesbisch, 1322750031, Seeabenteuer, 67218011, Sport, 67927011, Western, 66034011, Belletristik, 54071011, Genres, 52044011, Fremdsprachige Bücher
