A huge, folio book of 346 pp. put together by former government employees in California and vegetarians living in South America (honest) -- with little or no input from actual ranchers living on the American range -- who hired an Italian photographer to help them put together this piece of anti-ranching propaganda, which claims that ranchers who pay "below market" grazing fees (where there is not and cannot be any "market") to the federal government to graze their cattle on lands which have never been purchased by the federal government and thus do not belong to the federal government but where the ranchers own state-adjudicated grazing rights are somehow "subsidized" by American taxpayers to "ruin" their own range. (In fact, just as the authors would wish, federal "managers" are now seizing land and cattle and putting these honest Americans out of work by the thousands. See "Wayne Hage," "the Hammond family of Oregon," or "The Bundy Ranch, Nevada.") In one wonderful photo, here, healthy grazed land to the right of a fence line stands ready to bring forth lush green grass with the coming of spring, while to the left of the fence line authors define as "recovered" a parcel with knee-deep grass and brush which went to waste and now stand brown, dried, and ready to go up in a massive range fire at the first lightning strike. (For views based on something other than faith in the ability of Gaia to make abandoned Western desert rangeland resemble an Amazon rainforest, look up Allan Savory, whose findings are confirmed by Texas A&M Range Scientist Richard Teague and Rodale Institute soil scientist Dr. Elaine Ingham . . . or simply read a few issues of C.J.
