On Saturday the 8th August we made preparations for getting under weigh at four o'clock in the afternoon. Two days before we hadseen the East India Company's transport ship the ' Madras' arrive in the harbour. She had come with the news of the general spread of the mutiny among the Sepoy troops and the massacre of the English officers. She had hurried to the Cape under her whole steam power to ask immediate assistance. She had taken only sixteen days to come from Ceylon. The governor was to despatch two regiments and a company of artillery-men. He is afraid to go farther, lest he should expose his own frontier to the Caffres. Similar transport ships had been sent to Mauritius, Ceylon, Singapore and Australia. All the troops on their way to China will now be d...<
