A Companion to the Roman Republic - Paperback

2010, ISBN: 9781444334135

Hardcover, ID: 478679919

Paris - Chez Pissot, 1780 Book. Good. Hardcover. The Comte de Tressan's brilliant interpretation of Boyardo's work. In French. With charming head and tail pieces. Interesting armorial bookplates of Thomas Philip Earl de Grey, Wrest Park to front pastedown, and Betsy Aikin-Sneath to front free-endpaper. Louis-lisabeth de la Vergne, comte de Tressan (4 November 1705, Le Mans - 31 October 1783, from a fall from a carriage en route to Saint-Leu-la-Fort) was a French soldier, physician, scientist, medievalist and writer, best known for his adaptations of romans chevaleresques of the Middle Ages, which contributed to the rise of the Troubadour style in the French arts. Aged 13, he was the companion of the young Louis XV, then lieutenant-gnral and king's aide de camp at the battle of Fontenoy. He was made governor of Toul and was summoned by king Stanislas to his court at Lunville, where he received the title of grand marshal. The first director of the Socit Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres of Nancy in 1751 and a member of several other academies in France and abroad, he was elected a member of the Acadmie des sciences in 1749 and of the Acadmie franaise in 1780. A friend of Voltaire and Buffon, he frequented the salon of Mme de Tencin and composed several odes as well as adaptations of chivalric romances, which he translated and adapted from Spanish and Old French, into editions which would be re-issued several times. He was also the author of one of the first treatises on electricity in French. Matteo Maria Boiardo (1440/1 December 20, 1494) was an Italian Renaissance poet. Boiardo was born at, or near, Scandiano (today's province of Reggio Emilia); the son of Giovanni di Feltrino and Lucia Strozzi, he was of noble lineage, ranking as Count of Scandiano, with seignorial power over Arceto, Casalgrande, Gesso, and Torricella. Boiardo was an ideal example of a gifted and accomplished courtier, possessing at the same time a manly heart and deep humanistic learning. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed. Front joint is cracked. Internally, firmly bound. Remarably bright and clean from the age of this book, with just the odd spot.
