The following are simple sentences because each has a single combination of subject and predicate. Simple subject and predicate: The hero of Bunker Hill was slain. Compound subject: Longfellow and Lowell lived in Cambridge. Compound predicate: He rallied the soldiers and drove back the enemy. The following is a compound sentence because each of the thoughts recorded is grammatically independent of the other. At the same time the relation is close enough to justify combining the two members in a single sentence. Everybody had something to say about it, but nobody thought it at all a small pudding for a large family. The following sentence is complex because it contains a dependent clause. " When it had said these words " modifies the verb and is, therefore, an adverbial clause. When it had said these words, the specter took the wrapper from the table and bound it round its head as before. 28. MODIFIERS The simplest form of sentence is one containing a subject and a predicate without modifiers, as: John ran. This sentence tells nothing about John except that he ran, and nothing about his running. As soon as you wish to express any but the simplest thoughts, you begin to use modifiers. In other words, you begin to limit the meaning of your subject and predicate. It may help to understand the meaning of a modifier to think of it as answering a question.
