But on this subject probably, as a distinguished commander said, least said, soonest mended. Let us, in the words of another wise saw, indulge a pleasing expectation, that better times are coming. There isone objection that has been rather forcibly put forward-by the critics, against Antony and Cleopatra, that it is such a complete violation of the umties. that it is impossible for the mind to accommodate itself to so vast a stretch of all probability. To this it may be replied that the same objections may equally be urged against many other of Shakspeares historical plays; and if they were allowed to influence the decision of managers, we might be deprived by this hyper-sensitiveness of classical affectation, of the pleasure we derive from witnessing some of his noblest productions. The remarks of Schlegel are perhaps. conclusive as to the weight that should attach to such ultra-refined criticisms: -- The fulness and variety of political and warlike events, to which the union of the three divisions of the Roman world under one master, nece sarily gave rise, were, perhaps, too great to admit of being clearly exhibited in one dramatic picture. -- In this consists the great difliculty of the historical drama, itmust be a crowded extract, and a living development of history. The difliculty, however, has generally been successfully overcome by Shakspeare, But here many things which are transacted in the background, are merely alluded to, in a manner which supposes an intimate acquaintance with the history, and a work of art should contain everything necessary for fully understanding it within itself.
