Excerpt: Gao Gang (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Go Gng; Wade-Giles: Kao Kang) (1905-1954) was a Chinese Communist political figure. A native of Hengshan, Shaanxi Province, he joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1926. In the mid-1930s he was in charge of a small independent Communist area at Baoan, Shaanxi, where the Long March led by Mao Zedong ended. Gao joined the CCP in 1926 and rose to lead the northern Shaanxi base area in the early 1930s; Liu Zhidan commanded the armed forces in the area at the time and Xi Zhongxun administered government. The three were under arrest when the Long March arrived in Yanan in late 1935, victims of the power struggle between Moscow-trained supporters of Wang Ming and those backing Mao Zedong and his allies. As one of the few leaders with extensive local contacts, Gao turned Shaanxi into the CCP war-time power base. He was one of 55 party members attending the September-November 1938 6th plenum of the 6th Party Congress, albeit as an observer along with Luo Ronghuan, Nie Rongzhen, He Long, Luo Ruiqing, Deng Xiaoping and Peng Zhen. It was at this meeting that Mao Zedong consolidated his hold on political power.
