SERIES: Clark's foreign theological library ; ; new series, v. 42, 44; Though he was a proselytizing Protestant, Delitzsch (1813-1890) was dedicated to studying Judaism, influenced by Julius Fuerst. He knew Hebrew and was familiar with the Talmud and medieval Jewish literature, and taught theology at Leipzig, Rostock, and Erlangen. Though he had an "affection" for Judaism and fought against anti-Semitism, he also published pamphlets, founded a magazine, and began the Institutum Judaicum in Leipzig all with the goal of conversion to Christianity. His Biblical commentaries, including on Isaiah, are rooted in philology, and took a conservative, traditional approach. Franz Delitzsch (1813-1890), a German Lutheran theologian & Hebraist of international reputation, was Professor of Theology at Rostock from 1846 to 1850, at Erlangen until 1867, & later at Leipzig. The lecturer not only told about the many remarkable discoveries made in Assyria and Babylonia, but also drew a parallel between Babylonian civilization and religion as newly laid bare and the records of religion and civilization given in the Old Testament. This comparison was largely to the prejudice of the Old Testament content, and was intended in particular to show that both Monotheism and the early worship of Jaweh originated not with the Hebrews, but in Babylonia.
