Not illustrated. 1877 Excerpt: ...the conclusion that the digit and 20-6 cubit were independent; if they had not been so, the digits forming integral parts of the cubit would certainly have been noted; but the cubit being decimally divided, as is seen in the list of examples of it, the 28 digits had so little connection with the decimal scale that they were apparently regarded as having nothing to do with each other. Thus ten of the eleven independent standards of measures, found inductively from the Egyptian monuments, are represented, on the cubit rods, or simply connected with those so shown: affording a very strong confirmation of the results in this case, where they can be tested by contemporary evidence. (46) The sceptres borne by officials on the early Egyptian tombs are worth notice. The usual length of the thin part is 64 squares of the canon of proportion, and the thick end squares more. There being 19 squares to the height of a man, this gives the length of the thin part as about 23 inches, and the total 28£. This seems as if the lengths of these rods might be 32 and 40 digits (23-3 and 29-1 inches); and what supports the idea of such multiples of the digit, is the probability (from various sources) that the digit is a binary fraction of an original unit, as we find 8 digits marked on the cubit rods, and 16 and 32 digits formed Pelasgic and Etrurian units. The form of a thin length agreeing to one unit, and a thicker addition making the total give another unit, is found in the Edfou Nilometer. CHAPTER V. Babylonia, Assyria, Persia, And Syria.
