Harmondsworth. Middlesex.: Fourth Estate, 1985. Hardback. Price clipped to D/J. Edited with an Introduction by David Eakin and Helmut Gerber.Towards the end of his life he planned a further volume of short stories, to be entitled In Minor Keys. The present editors have adopted Moore's title for their collection, in which are reprinted the fourteen stories by George Moore never issued in book form, including those destined for his last collection. The result is a rich sampling of Moore's fictional talent. His early, most admired period, is well represented. There are four stories of his later years, which reflect his response to fold and irish traditions, but also (in the case of The Turn of the Road of 1927) show that Moore was still a superb exponent of naturalism and human psychology. 229 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.). From the wild fells of the Border country, across the rich valleys of the Clyde and the Tweed, to the Highlands and Islands and out beyond to Orkney and Shetland, past and present combine to weave a rare magic. Moor and mountain, abbey and castle, the old traditional scenes of Scottish life and the new holiday resorts such as the skiing centre at Aviemore that yearly attract thousands of visitors are here caught in Doug Corrance's splendid photographs to remind or to delight. The varied subjects reflect the richness and diversity that Scotland has to offer. The introduction by Lord Home complements the pictures by its freshness, its colour and its communication of enjoyment. This is a book that distils legend and history, landscape and people with the haunting, lilting spirit of Scotland. Illustrated throughout.
