Savannah, GA USA: Self-Published. Hardcover. Dust jacket condition: None. Inscribed and SIGNED by Author. Bit of yellow spotting at long edge of textblock. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Illustrated with black and whiote photos. THIRD TO NONE is a comprehensive, thoroughly annotated history of the first Jewish community established in the South and the third organized on the American continent. The book fills a void in the documentation of Jewish life in the New World. Savannah was the scene of the largest migration of Israelites in the Colonial period. Forty-two Portuguese and German Jews set sail from England aboard the William and Sarah in January of 1733, arriving at Yamacraw Bluff on July 11th. From these forty-two and others who later took up residence in the city have descended some of America's most eminent personages-Cardozos and Seixases, Sheftalls and Minises, Nuneses and De la Mottas. The ancestors of Uriah P. Levy (owner of Monticello) and Mordecai Manuel Noah (often referred to as the founder of American Zionism) were in the first contingent of Savannah pioneers. The founder of the Jewish community of the nation's capital, Isaac Polock, began his mercantile career along the shores of the Savannah River. Three American Presidents, Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, so esteemed Savannah's Hebrew congregation that they addressed letters to its members on the subject of religious liberty. President Washington's instrument was the first sent by an American President to a Jewish worshipping body. The saga of Savannah Jewry witnesses to the uniqueness of the American experiment. Almost from the beginning, local Israelites enjoyed all privileges, including owning land, holding public office, bearing arms, and praying in their own rented synagogue. Lutheran Pastor Bolzius wrote in 1738: "The German Jews have in Savannah the same liberties as any Englishman." Elsewhere in the nation, the story was differently told. Indeed, over the course of centuries, Jewish participation in every realm of activity was assured, and remarkable instances of Jewish contributions to commerce, the professions, governmental service, philanthropy and warfare exist. Local Jews have made a name for themselves as Civil War spies and chiefs-of-police, as Hollywood producers and newspaper editors, as local postmasters and physicians to the jail. As evidence of the close fraternity that passed between Gentiles and Jews, Savannah's first two synagogues were raised without subscription-taking among the members. The general populace provided the necessary resource and support. THIRD TO NONE sheds new light on the American Jewish experience, challenging widespread misunderstandings about Jews in the South. Published for the 250th anniversary of Savannah's Mickve Israel Congregation, it merits a place of prominence on the bookshelves of people enthralled by the American dream. 426 pages.
