Paramount, 2000-04-04. VHS Tape. Very Good/Good. sleeve has some wear, tape in VG condition; When Frank Sinatra sang "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere, it's up to you, New York!" he probably didn't have the same odds in mind that line up against Henry and Nancy Clark in The Out-Of-Towners. Henry (Steve Martin) is an advertising man from Ohio who runs his life on an exacting schedule. His wife Nancy (Goldie Hawn) feels the spark has gone out of their lives together. After 24 years of marriage, their children are grown and nothing is tying them to their old home, so they decide to take a stab at relocating to New York City. Henry arranges a job interview in the Big Apple, they schedule a flight into Manhattan, and from that point on, anything that can go wrong does go wrong. Henry and Nancy's flight is delayed, their luggage is lost, their hotel reservations are cancelled, they're accosted by muggers, the cab they're riding in gets in a wreck, Henry is accidentally drugged and Nancy ends up in a group therapy meeting for sex addicts. The Out-Of-Towners is an updated remake of the 1970 comedy scripted by Neil Simon; the original version starred Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis as the hapless Midwesterners. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi, Paramount, 2000-04-04, Island Books. 1997. Paperback. Good. With a flourish of authorial prestidigitation, through this action-packed t ale of revenge Hunter transforms the seemingly unrelated Point of Impact an d Dirty White Boys, his most recent-and most critically acclaimed- novels, i nto parts one and two of a trilogy. In the process, Hunter confirms his sta tus as one of the most skilled hands in the thriller business. Former Marin e sniper Bob Lee Swagger has put his past behind him until he meets Russell Pewtie, who wants to write a book about Bob Lee's father, Earl, a state tr ooper who died in a shoot-out in Blue Eye, Ark., in 1955. The link between Pewtie and Bob Lee, which ties the three novels together, is that Lamar Pye , the escaped con who almost killed Pewtie's father in Dirty White Boys, tu rns out to be the son of one of the men who killed Earl. Behind that death, it's revealed here, lies a 40- year-old conspiracy that is somehow tied to the brutal murder of a young black girl that Earl was investigating on the day he died. The plot is fast-paced, well-constructed and builds to a pulse -pounding night ambush that echoes the finale of Point of Impact but that s tands on its own as a classic one-on-one confrontation. Other echoes of the earlier novels sound as well, giving this one the feel of a recapitulation , or a farewell. But then Hunter has set a high standard for himself-and wh ile this novel doesn't match the escalating craziness of Dirty White Boys o r the stone- cold efficiency of Point of Impact, it should seal his reputati on as an author who not only can write bestselling thrillers, but write the m exceedingly well., Island Books, 1997, New York: Dell, 1966. Universal Studios, 1996-04-30. VHS Tape. Good/Good. former rental in good condition in lightly worn sleeve; Erik (Brad Renfro) is a 13-year-old boy whose single mother, Gail (Diana Scarwid), has just moved to a new home in Minnesota. Erik feels like a fish out of water with his Southern accent, and he has trouble making friends until he meets Dexter (Joseph Mazzello), a kid a year or two younger who lives next door. Erik and Dexter get along fine, but Gail tells Erik not to go near Dexter when she learns that he contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion a few years ago. Erik ignores his mother's instructions and stands up for the frail Dexter at school, while Dexter's mom Linda (Annabella Sciorra) gives Erik the warmth, affection, and home cooking that Gail is too busy to provide. However, both boys are painfully aware of Dexter's illness, and when one of them spots a headline in a supermarket tabloid that a doctor in New Orleans has discovered a cure for AIDS, they run away together, determined to find the doctor and bring Dexter back as good as new. The Cure was the theatrical feature debut for actor-turned-director Peter Horton, who cut his directorial teeth on the TV series The Wonder Years and thirtysomething. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi, Universal Studios, 1996-04-30, Island Books. 1997.
