RYAN MCGINLEY: WHISTLE FOR THE WIND - signed or inscribed book

2012, ISBN: 9780847838318

Hardcover, ID: 518823596

New York City, NY: Rizzoli Publishers, 2012. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Rizzoli Publishers, 2012. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 240 pages. Retrospective monograph on subject. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by An Art Service: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 6 pounds. Wraparound pictorial hard boards, as issued. Photographs by Ryan McGinley. Text by the great American film director Gus Van Sant and other contributors. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is vastly superior to the early catalogs that were first published by McGinley. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Ryan McGinley's "Whistle For The Wind". Some of his finest and most representative images, culled from his oeuvre thus far. Although not intended as such, it is the second major retrospective of its kind, preceded by Twin Palms' "Ryan McGinley: You And I" (2011). While there is inevitably an overlap in terms of the images, there are many beautiful images which appear in this volume only. Notable among them are McGinley's portraits of Coley Brown, who went on to become a photographer in his own right ("Jam Jelly Honey Wild Rice"), but is seen here in full-frontal nudes, a Beautiful Youth. "An artist who understood and chronicled his own generation as no artist had before him. McGinley managed to capture the hedonistic adventures of youth culture, kids hanging out and enjoying life, but without the dark underbelly of earlier artists who mined similar themes. As the work evolved, he moved away from the more documentary aspect of the early photographs and began to create scenarios where he could explore different ideas (aesthetic and otherwise). This eventually led to the now legendary summer-long road trips, capturing groups of twenty-somethings amongst a variety of American landscapes. In his most recent body of work, McGinley continues to explore, in black-and-white as well as in color, the body but in the still, pared-down atmosphere of his studio" (Publisher's blurb). "Whoever I'm photographing, I sort of fall in love with, or rather my camera falls in love with them" (Ryan McGinley). An absolute "must-have" title for Ryan McGinley collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by Ryan McGinley. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. McGinley made a one-time-only appearance in New York City to launch the book during which his signature was obtained. This title is now collectible. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Signed copies available online command as much as $400. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the "Photographer of the Year" Infinity Award in 2007. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A flawless copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER RYAN MCGINLEY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0847838315., Rizzoli Publishers, 2012

In 2000, Ryan McGinley, then a student, staged his first exhibition of photographs in an abandoned SoHo gallery. To coincide with the show, the artist created several handmade books featuring a sampling of his work entitled The Kids Are Alright. A copy eventually found its way into the hands of Sylvia Wolf, then a curator of photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2003, Wolf mounted an exhibition of his work at the venerable institution, the youngest artist to ever have a solo show at the museum. What Wolf recognized-and what other critics, curators, and collectors would quickly discover-was an artist who understood and chronicled his own generation (habituées of New York City's downtown) as no artist had before him. McGinley had managed to capture the hedonistic adventures of youth culture-kids hanging out and enjoying life-but without the dark underbelly of earlier artists who mined similar themes. In his most recent body of work, McGinley continues to explore-in black and white as well as in color-the body but in the still, pared down atmosphere of his studio. In this first major monograph chronicling the entirety of the artist's career, McGinley's work is considered by three extraordinary figures: Chris Kraus, novelist and critic; John Kelsey, writer, artist and activist; and Gus Van Sant, the auteur filmmaker. Each attends-through the lens of their own rich insights-to various aspects of the artist's work and creative process, offering in-depth and unique perspectives on McGinley's work and import Aantal pagina's: Engels 314 x 279 x 27 mm Boeken > Engelse boeken > Kunst & Cultuur > Fotografie & Design > Fotoboek Kunst & Cultuur unisex 0847838315 Boeken Neville Wakefield Engelse boeken Boeken - Engelse boeken - Neville Wakefield, Groothandel - Marston Bruna
