Christopher Marlowe And Richard Bai: Journeys Through the Elizabethan Underground - hardcover

ISBN: 0838639747

[SR: 1821045], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780838639740], Fairleigh Dickinson, Fairleigh Dickinson, Book, [PU: Fairleigh Dickinson], Fairleigh Dickinson, This book contains a thorough re-evaluation of the problems surrounding the activities, dramatic, literary, and otherwise, of Christopher Marlowe, particularly in his relations with his associate Richard Baines, in the latter part of Marlowe's life. It is the first full-length biography of Richard Baines, the object of which is to act as a lens through which to view standard Marlovian biography from a new angle and with a fresh eye. This new book thus comprises two interlinking biographical studies which inform both literary criticism and early modern history, puts the Baines/Marlowe relationship into a new perspective, and demonstrates the symbiotic relationship that existed in actuality between the two men in their lifetimes and which, of its nature, sets up a literary, historiographical, cultural, and scholastic virtual relationship on the web of history. Kendall's method is not to give full-scale interpretations of individual plays and poems or to attempt a conventional Canterbury/Cambridge/London appraisal of Marlowe's life, but rather to take the reader along a rough chronological path that traces the life of Richard Baines, picking suitable spots to break off the narrative and analyze Marlowe's writings and actions and reinterpret known events connected with his life and with Baines's (especially where they overlap). By offering fresh primary evidence, Kendall is able to suggest new ways in which each influenced the life of the other - especially how Baines influenced and affected Marlowe., 2328, Actors & Entertainers, 2327, Arts & Literature, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 2347, Television Performers, 2327, Arts & Literature, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 2377, Great Britain, 9681299011, Europe, 2376, Historical, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 300961, Travelers & Explorers, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 86, Humor & Entertainment, 4456, Humor, 4484, Movies, 521000, Performing Arts, 4550, Pop Culture, 4402, Puzzles & Games, 4564, Radio, 1622, Sheet Music & Scores, 4569, Television, 11871, Trivia & Fun Facts, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10207, Criticism & Theory, 10204, History & Criticism, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10016, British, 10088, Contemporary, 10090, Historical, 16004661, Humor & Satire, 10096, Poetry, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 491408, English Literature, 468236, Literature, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491414, Europe, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

Christopher Marlowe and Richard Baines: Journeys Through the Elizabethan Underground - used book

ISBN: 9780838639740

ID: 3673134

This book contains the first full-scale account and evaluation of the life of Richard Baines, Christopher Marlowe's Judas. With the use of new biographical material, it illuminates areas of Marlowe's life and work that have not previously seen the scholastic light. Beginning by tracing the course of Baines's extraordinary progress through the English College in Rheims a decade or more before he vilified Marlowe in his infamous note, and following his further travels through the Elizabethan underground thereafter, Baines is seen to be as much a John the Baptist in relation to the formulation of Marlowe's heretical opinions as he was a Judas in betraying them. Such relationships inevitably lead to showdowns. Theirs came when they were engaged in counterfeiting activities in Flushing in the Low Countries, which just as inevitably proved a watershed in both of their lives. An actor, director, and screenwriter. Christopher Marlowe and Richard Baines: Journeys Through the Elizabethan Underground Kendall, Roy, Fairleigh Dickinson University Press
