Esta obra analiza la evolución del clero secular en la diócesis de México, desde la llegada de los primeros clérigos en 1519, hasta el año de 1650. El trabajo reposa sobre la trayectoria de estos eclesiásticos, a la luz de las orientaciones canónicas y regias. La primera parte aborda el establecimiento del clero secular en el inmenso territorio diocesano, así como los obstáculos que tuvieron que afrontar en el ejercicio de su ministerio sacerdotal. La segunda parte presenta el origen social y la formación intelectual de estos clérigos, factores determinantes para el desarrollo de su carrera eclesiástica. La tercera parte, además de abordar el proceso de nominación de estos sacerdotes, se interesa en su misión pastoral. La investigación tiene por objetivo principal dar a conocer a los clérigos seculares que condujeron espiritualmente a los feligreses católicos novohispanos en el espíritu de las orientaciones novedosas del concilio de Trento. Hasta ahora, no se habían estudiado las características propias del clero secular en su conjunto, a través del desarrollo de la teología pastoral tridentina, tal como se manifestaron cotidianamente en las primeras décadas de la joven Iglesia mexicana.
