New York, New York: Harper & Brothers, 1901. First printing. Original Wraps. Fair. Single issue. Small quarto, 10 1/4" tall, pages 165 to 326 + ads, printed beige wraps. A good issue over all with minor shelf wear and exterior soiling, rubbing and edge chipping to the back strip, Interior clean binding solid, paper just slightly yellowed, BUT several illustrations from the Newport story are cut out and there is a dampstain to the bottom fore-edge margin which does not affect text. This is an original issue and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) as well as the advertisements and covers. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time., Harper & Brothers, 1901, Boulder: Westview Press, 1996.. xii+242 pages. Trade paperback. Illustrated. Notes. Index. Very Good with light rubbing to extremities. Some penciled notes through introduction; text otherwise clean. ISBN: 081332727x When do our bodies cease to be ours alone? At what point and under what political and social circumstances do our bodies become the subtle, but no less complete, inscription of the will of another person, an institution, or a state? Boscagli takes the reader on a highly informed literary and cultural excursion through European culture between 1880 and 1930, taking long looks at works by Forster, Eliot, Rupert Brooke, D.H. Lawrence, Oscar Wilde and others, as well as Baden-Powell and the evolution of the Boy Scouts. This erudite study of our obsessions with male physical perfection undergirds and explains the late 20th century preoccupation with exercise, athletics, diet, and consumerism., Boulder: Westview Press, 1996.

When do our bodies cease to be ours alone? At what point and under what political and social circumstances do our bodies become the subtle, but no less complete, inscription of the will of another person, an institution, or a state? Maurizia Boscagli analyzes the early twentieth-century transformation of the male body from Forster's "unassuming black-coated clerk" and Eliot's "young man carbuncular" to the brutal, tanned musculature of fascism. She argues that this new male superman corporeality corresponded precisely with the rise of early mass consumer culture--generally associated with the female--and the advent of fascism. This mechanistic, polished, and vigorous male creature inevitably became an object of political and economic obedience and conformity, and in the concept of "the national body," a fighting machine.Boscagli takes the reader on a highly informed, literary, and cultural excursion through European culture between 1880 and 1930. She stops for long, enlightening looks at Oscar Wilde and "The Picture of Dorian Gray," the Good War and the poet Rupert Brooke, Baden-Powell and the British Boy Scouts, and the primitive in D. H. Lawrence's "The Plumed Serpent." This erudite study about our obsessions with male physical perfection undergirds and explains the late-twentieth-century preoccupation with exercise, athletics, diet, and consumerism.
