The Jacquinot Safe Zone: Wartime Refugees in Shanghai - hardcover

2008, ISBN: 0804757933

[SR: 1596675], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780804757935], Stanford University Press, Stanford University Press, Book, [PU: Stanford University Press], 2008-02-13, Stanford University Press, When Japanese forces attacked Shanghai in 1937, a French Jesuit, Father Robert Jacquinot de Besange, S.J., heroically stood up for human life. Father Jacquinot, who spent twenty-seven years in China, was determined to provide safety and refuge to victims of modern warfare. Through relentless negotiations and deft diplomacy, Father Jacquinot convinced Japanese and Chinese military leaders to allow for the establishment of a safe zone in the midst of the ongoing war. Father Jacquinot's example was subsequently copied in other Chinese cities and saved the lives of more than half a million Chinese civilians over the course of the brutal Sino-Japanese war. The Jacquinot Zone is mentioned by name in both the Protocols and Commentaries to the Geneva Convention of 1949.This book explores the leadership qualities and personality of Father Jacquinot and what prompted him to take such a surprisingly bold stance in coming to the aid of war refugees and civilians. The book delves into the special circumstances that contributed to this unique and fascinating historical episode. Father Jacquinot's work in creating a safe zone for refugees fleeing wartime chaos is singular in history and provides an important example for the protection and support of refugees today., 4891, China, 4884, Asia, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4897, Japan, 4884, Asia, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5031, World War II, 5011, Military, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5035, World, 15812171, Civilization & Culture, 3825131, Expeditions & Discoveries, 4992, Jewish, 11764653011, Maritime History & Piracy, 6343224011, Religious, 16244141, Slavery & Emancipation, 15812211, Women in History, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11288, Sociology, 16244271, Abuse, 271633011, Class, 297480, Death, 11291, Marriage & Family, 16311191, Medicine, 10582, Race Relations, 11293, Rural, 11294, Social Theory, 11296, Urban, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 491412, Asia, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 684270011, Military, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491478, Sociology, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
