Strong characters, certainly-- Chandler gripped our attention through the most impenetrable plots with his powerfully-drawn characters. But narrative ingenuity is the ace card for most of the top writers in the genre, and it's here that Coben really excels. Of course, having a novel and unusual protagonist is a highly desirable asset, and in Myron Bolithar, his fast-thinking and vulnerable sports agent, Coben has the perfect centre for his labyrinthine plot. Living down his dubious past, Myron finds himself conned into babysitting Brenda Slaughter, the hottest female sports star around. But when her father disappears, and the mob starts leaning on her, Myron finds himself undertaking duties far more dangerous than the average sports agent ever faces. And with his old friend, the urbane and deadly Windsor Lockwood, Myron is up against very powerful men who'll go to any lengths to protect their secrets. Coben's dialogue is studded with caustic wit, and the chinks in his hero's armour (particularly on the romantic front) make his helter-skelter tale a real delight. Even those readers without a trace of an interest in sport will be firmly on board from page one, with the feisty Brenda making the perfect foil for the beleaguered Myron. Coben's American success shows every sign of being replicated in the UK. --Barry Forshaw, 270408, Mystery, 72, Crime, Thrillers & Mystery, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books

As readers who have enjoyed his appearances in original paperbacks already know, Harlan Coben's former professional basketball star Myron Bolitar is not your everyday testosterone-enriched jock. Myron is a mild-mannered guy who drinks chocolate soda and until very recently lived at home with his parents in suburban New Jersey. In his hardcover debut, we find Myron sharing a New York apartment with his longtime lady friend, writer Jessica Culver, and still running MB SportsReps, where he ostensibly manages the careers of other athletes, but really spends most of his time playing private eye. The arrival in Myron's life of rising pro basketball star Brenda Slaughter seriously tests his commitment to Jessica, who is in Hollywood working on a movie. It seems that Brenda's father Horace--Myron's old coach--has disappeared, and Brenda is receiving death threats that might involve a gangster family's plans for a new female professional basketball league. Or the threats might have something to do with Brenda's mother's connection to a wealthy New Jersey political family. Myron and his banker friend Win, a preppy with a penchant for violence, are more than enough to double-team the bad guys. Previous Myron Bolitar games in paperback include Backspin, Deal Breaker, Drop Shot, and Fade Away. fiction, literature and fiction, mystery, mystery thriller and suspense, suspense, thrillers Suspense, Random House Audio
