Japanese firms once led the world in fields such as electronics and robotics. Japanese products were renowned for their reliability and quality - a success based on systematic refinement of production processes and technological enhancement of existing products. Now Japan's economy is sluggish, and many Japanese firms are struggling. Faced with economic difficulties, Japanese managers have sought to bypass the research and development process and revisit the exhausted sources of past success. This is not a sustainable solution for the individual firms or for the economy as a whole. Japanese firms will not find success in continuing to imitate other firms' product concepts. This book discusses how the future for Japanese firms lies in strategy and innovation. The future success of Japanese firms will be based on new products and new concepts, and developing these will require improved communications networks in research and development, strategic innovation and integration, concept-oriented innovation, and a strong management-driven approach to research and development.
